While the choice of tools and engines available to mod and indie developers increases by the day, traditionally engines the magnitude and relevance of UE have been out of the reach of smaller teams due to licensing costs edging close to a million. However while it may be free to develop and release a non-commercial game, should you wish to profit from your hard work the current UDK license states that 25% of all revenue earnt beyond $5,000 will be paid to Epic as your licensing cost. I consider this a small price to pay with no risk for developers who now have access to proven technology. What will the developers do with this? Only time will tell, I for one see the availability of unrestrictive powerful tools like this as PROOF of the POWER that PC gaming still has. While traditional PC developers (i.e. Infinity Ward and others) may be shunning the PC crowd with "consolized" versions of their game and trying to convince us that the reason for these decisions are to provide a better experience, we know better, and we deserve better. No other platform provides the power and creativity possibilities that the PC does, no other platform makes you jump through hoops to release via digital distribution. Indie developers... I for one eagerly await the games you make because of decisions like this, as I know you only making games you want to make and play.
Download Holy crap. Considering what you're getting, that must've taken a lot of thought from Epic Games to let it off as free. Well done, Epic Games.
Awesome. Hopefully we'll see more indie games with this now.

They'll have recovered all their development costs through their other licensees by now anyway. Besides, it sounds like their licensing agreement will work perfectly well for them. UE3's a potent engine though, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what people do with it.
screw Unity, I'm using this.
It's the SDK, not the ACTUAL engine.
Great I don't really like the unreal engine :/
It's the SDK, not the ACTUAL engine.
Clearly you don't know what and SDK is, and what an engine is.
uh. holy crap. :wth:
This is fantastic. I downloaded it a few hours ago.
Downloaded both SDK and the Ball standalone demo.
Down with Infinity Ward Up with PC games!
Clearly you don't know what and SDK is, and what an engine is.
lol. a SDK usually means that there is a limitation, such as Valve's SDK (limited but still incredibly flexable).
standalone mods
Good for them.
Where does it save to? I can't find it?
Unreal Engine 3 was fucking expensive back during early negotiations from what I've heard, glad to hear it's much more accessible and practical for basement developers now.
well I tried to install it, but it crashed and corrupted the file, so now I have to download it again...
Down with Infinity Ward Up with PC games!
Hurray for Canadian game companies!
better get crackin on how to use it now.
Well, learning UnrealScript is going to be interesting... [editline]05:01AM[/editline] Oh sweet, SpeedTree is included. :v:
It's a closed engine, but you don't need full source unless you want to add new graphics features or different physics or something. And it includes UT3 "lite" or a demo, I can't tell. I never played the demo.
my computer is too shitty apparently, oh well, back to Unity I suppose.
my computer is too shitty apparently, oh well, back to Unity I suppose.
How so. Unless it can't run UE3 games?
well its the only way I can explain it crashing when I install it.
well its the only way I can explain it crashing when I install it.
Probably corrupt installer.
First one to post any material here of their own games / mods whatsoever gets my 1x friendly
First one to post any material here of their own games / mods whatsoever gets my 1x friendly
Does the included ut3 count? :D
Asking only 25% isn't bad considering the engine license used to be upwards of $250,000. Oh, and I talked to my programmer buddy again. Now he claims he's not impressed because "it doesn't scale large enough". :downs:
Are there any detailed guides for total beginners on how to use this SDK?
