Yesterday, feeling nostalgic, bought chrome hounds for 7 dollars. I remember when i first got the 360 I played that game to death due to the multiplayer.
I pop it in and went to xbox live to see if my old squad was still together, but instead i get a server connection error. I thought nothing of it and went on the computer and went to the main site.
I get this horror of a message:
"We regret to inform everyone that the Chromehounds online service will be closing on January 6, 2010. At this time, all online components for Chromehounds will no longer be accessible and the game will only be available for play in Offline modes. We would like to thank everyone in the Chromehounds community for their passion and support over the past 3 years of service".
I got pissed, the multiplayer was 90% of the game, and Sega shuts it down. Apparently im not the only one that was pissed, the forums are packed with angry letters to Sega.
I thought Chrome Hound's multiplayer was epic about the way it was strategic.
info about multiplayer:
The Neroimus War (A.K.A Multiplayer) is an online campaign mode which involves the three countries fighting for the continent of Neroimus. Players can join or make a squad, the equivalent of a clan or guild in other online games, to participate in the War. The map of Neroimus is divided into several areas connected by paths. Each area is divided into several maps. Players may launch a mission within any enemy area adjacent to a friendly area, or in any friendly area which is under attack. Victory yields merit points, which raise your rank, captured parts for the lottery, and capture points. When a country has gained a certain amount capture points on a map, 25,000 to 32,000 for normal battlegrounds and 50,000 for capital cities, that map is turned over to the country. An area belongs to the country which has the most capture points in its maps. When a capital city falls, all areas under that country become part of the conquering country, and players may only fight to reclaim their capital, or seek asylum in another country. The War ends when one country controls the entire map or after two months have passed. After a war ends, squads may choose to change alliance to a different country, and then the next War begins. It should be noted that all of the experimental parts have become available, now only captured parts are available.
Role types
There are six different mech classes known Role Types (RT for short) to choose from in Chromehounds. Each class of mech has seven different missions in the single-player campaign mode.
The different RTs are:
Soldiers The frontline offensive unit, generally medium speed with high powered close range weaponry. (Designated with the color blue in game)
Snipers Long range units. Generally bipedal, medium charge timed weaponry, lower armored. (Designated with the color yellow in game)
Defenders Bodyguard units, generally for snipers, heavy gunners, and commanders. Slow, but are well armored and can deal out massive close range damage. (Designated with the color orange in game)
Scouts Lightly armored, lightly armed recon units. Attempts to gather intelligence and capture COMBAS towers for the Commander. (Designated with the color green in game)
Heavy Gunners Long range artillery. Generally lightly armored with the most powerful weapons in the game. Requires keen trajectory-aim ability. (Designated with the color purple in game)
Tactics Commanders Generally lightly armored and armed hound that will keep track battlefield information and disperse it to the team. (Designated with the color red in game)
Is anyone else angry about this?
:colbert:
Not at you, but at sega.
yeah it seems sega started sucking ass a lot recently with all their recent failures
AvP3 is a good example (i bought it and was disapointed. It's fun,but so short and unsatisfying after a little while)
Oh come on, they need the server money for their new sonic games which just so happen to be the best games ever.
Excuse me sega.
i miss multiplayer. way better than half the shit out there now.

Didn't they publish AVP3?

They shelled out their money on a now dead game *cough* Outrun Online Arcade*cough*.
My biggest Sega 'What the hell'?
They released Yakuza 3 on the SAME DAY AS FINAL FANTASY XIII! In fact, the entire marketing for Yakuza 3 has been one giant Sega what the hell... No one even knows what the hell it is. =\
Oh, and lets not forget Sega's brilliant new boxart design:

ESRB soulpatch... Sega, what the hell.
I loved chromehounds. I had the best sniper ever. It has barely any recoil with some of the best cannons in the game.
Sega just keeps shitting out shitty games.
HUUURRR LETS MAKE ANOTHER SONIC GAME, WHAT CAN GO WRONG?
Unlike most PC games, console publishers have every right to terminate the online service at their own discretion. At least we have MW4 Mercenaries now.
I actually liked AvP3 regardless of it being short. Infection and survival are always fun.
Here's an idea for Sega:
Fucking make Shenmue 3 you fucking cunts.

Don't be stupid, any game developer on earth puts a neat little clause in their EULAs saying an essential "If we want to we can and will turn the servers off and you agreed to this so don't even start whining on the forums"

yeah the second one was a huge goddamn cliffhanger. wheres 3 sega?
I wish Chromehounds was on PC.
Then we'd never have a closed master server :saddowns:

fucking agreed
loved Shenmue 2
at the end i was like "fuck yeah, there's gonna be a third!"
years later,nothing on the horizon
fuck you sega
Shenmue sucked. All you did for the first half of the game was asked about your father or whoever you was looking for. I know, me and my brother played if you about 4 to 5 hours straight. Took it back to Movie Gallery.

Except on PC, a lot of games don't require you to connect to a main server to play games, so even after the company stops supporting them they are still playable online.
Most games with dedicated servers need a master server, but maintaining one is cheap, and besides, the community can make one. See: Tribes 2.

I was very sad and disappointed when I finished Shenmue 2 only to learn that there wasn't a third game to finish off the story. The ending pretty much just solved nothing and left it at a massive cliffhanger.
There was a recent interview with a Sega rep, however, and he stated that they'd love to make a third Shenmue while hinting it'd be possible if a console company would back them. Sony or Nintendo should pick them up (seeing as how releasing Shenmue 2 on Xbox was a bit of a mistake).

Well, I don't think it's fair to say it sucked, since it was way ahead of its time and was very influential. However, I can understand why some people didn't like it (like you) as it's simply not a game for everyone. It's slow-paced and a lot of the time you'll just be walking around.
I loved it though, since there was so much to do and the attention to detail in the world was incredible - especially when you take account of its age. I spent a lot of my time just exploring the cities - collecting trinkets, earning money through fights and jobs, gambling... I never got bored of it. It was without a doubt the most immersion experience I've ever had in a video game.

Too bad they took out mahjong and clubs just because "it didn't fit the American culture" and now you can never get all the trophies on that game.

Sorry for a small bump but, what the fuck?
You can't release a game that still has hundreds of players in the multiplayer and then just close it! This doesn't even make sense. There's no way Sega can't support the server. Chromehounds was much to awesome of a game to do this to. This MIGHT have been a LITTLE BIT more acceptable if it had a campaign that wasn't crap.
[editline]04:08PM[/editline]
I just found my copy of Chromehounds today after 6 or 7 months and was excited to get back on.
This is why source is better, you can make your OWN servers.

reply of the year.
holy bump. anyway, sega is now making sonic COLORS. sounds and looks like shit.
what a waste of money.
WHERES CHROME HOUNDS 2 DAMMIT
\caps
I remember Chromehounds when it came out. People (ie Xbox World 360) said it was boring so I didn't buy it. Looks neat though. Does it have splitscreen?
I wonder how long 'til Chromehounds gets unofficially (and probably illegally) ported to PC.

That would be awesome (difficult, but awesome).

Chromehounds had about 14 people left playing.
