Where to install HL1 mods

I just downloaded my first HL1 mod (just got HL1 over the summer when it was 95 cents) and I have no idea where to install it. I tried the sourcemods folder, which was said by a person from a link from Google, but thats not working. I also tried steamapps/grassybat folder and that didn't work. I restarted steam after installation and moving it.

Any help?

Edit: Also, the start file is a batch file, and I don't know if Vista could be the problem.

It was the internets idea, not mine.

Besides, it's better to try something out to see if it works, rather than not try it and miss out.
