A BRIEF HISTORY OF TRIBE
Once upon a time in a land far from ours, a company called GarageGames produced a game called Tribes. It was a spinoff of another game called Starsiege, but I doubt any of you whippersnappers remember that game. At first it sucked, but then someone figured out the ancient technique of skiing. By jumping repeatedly, you could avoid being slowed down by friction. And there began the story of Tribes. The game was changed entirely, you could now go really damn fast. Like, over 300 kph. 3 years later, it was sequel time. And then GarageGames pulled a super retarded move and slowed the game way down. When Tribes 2 was released, the base mode it was shipped with sucked many dicks. But it matters not, because this was 2001 and you could make your own mods. And so a team of ancient tribal modders, z0dd and ZOD created a mod called classic. It was so much better than Tribes 2 base, noone ever played T2 base again and everyone forgot about it. Now when you say "Tribes 2", it's just a given that you're referring to Tribes 2 classic. And so the Tribers of old lived happily, at least until that pile of sin named Vengeance came out. Don't bother playing that one it's like some weird hybrid of UT2004 and Tribes. Ascend is better than Vengeance but Tribes 2 is still king.
WHERE DO I ACQUIRE TRIBE
http://tribesnext.com/
Oh yeah also the Tribes 2 master servers went down. So a T2 mod called TribesNext was created with new master servers.
WHICH SERVERS SHOULD I PLAY ON?
90% of the servers are running some dumb mods, have bots or are playing base. (Base sucks and is slow)
There are 2 classic CTF servers.
One is named Goon Haven - It should be called Noob Haven, most people who spend their time here end up bad at Tribes. Try not to go on this one, but if the other good server is empty noone will think less of you.
Branzone Central (currently named Snap Crackle Pub) is another classic CTF server and is far superior to Goon Haven. Try to go on this one. They also have a better map pool.
TEACH ME HOW 2 TRIBE
Important stuff
Jetpacks - These consume energy and make you get your lazy ass off the ground. They also generate heat which allows missile launchers to lock onto you.
Generator - These supply power to your base. If it goes down you'll be without inventory stations and turrets.
Turrets - These come in quite a few different flavors. Some drain your energy, some shoot lock-on missiles, some just shoot you.
Inventory stations - When you spawn you'll be a light armor with nothing but a blaster, chaingun and disc launcher. To get weapons and heavier armor you'll need to visit one of these. They also replenish your health.
Deployable inventory stations - Same as above but will not allow you to change armor types. They also aren't tied to your generator and can be used even when it's down.
Health kits - Press Q to restore a bit of your health. These are your only way to regain health.
If you are trying to get an enemy out of your base, for the love of god get rid of your health kit before you do. Otherwise you will drop it on death and he will use it to regain health.
Armor Types
Light - Fragile, speedy. Good for new players because you can quickly get back to the action and it's more forgiving with energy management
Medium - In the middle
Heavy - Fat, shoots big green mortars everywhere. Generally uses shield pack to compensate for fatness.
Weapons
Disc Launcher - It shoots the blue spinny shits. While it has less DPS than the chaingun it's good for its burst damage and lack of bullet spread. It can also do something called a mine disc; you toss a mine at your opponent and then shoot the mine with a disc before it's armed. The combined explosion of the disc and the mine does massive damage and can instantly kill anyone in light armor. This weapon inherits 75% of your velocity when you fire it and projectiles travel at 95 m/s.
Chaingun - Pew pew pew. Solid anti-air weapon, best DPS bar spread. It has a somewhat large cone of fire however and will only be reliable for finishing at longer ranges. This weapon inherits 100% of your velocity when you fire it and projectiles travel at 700 m/s.
Grenade Launcher - Borderline overpowered, whenever your opponent will be grounded for a long-ish time use this. It kills VERY quickly and is a great weapon for engaging snipers (see below).
Laser Rifle - The same as every sniper you've experienced before, instant traveling bullets. It's only usable by a light armor with an energy pack. However this weapon consumes energy instead of ammunition. After you fire it you'll be out of jet energy and grounded for a while which makes you very vulnerable to minediscs and grenade spam.
Blaster - Low damage, ignores shields. If there's a shield pack using heavy camping your base and you can't get to an inventory station, use this and he will eventually die. Inherits 50% of your velocity when you fire it. Projectiles travel at 90 m/s.
Plasma Rifle - Slower projectiles than the disc, fires faster, less damage. Not much to this.
Shocklance - Zaps people for large amounts of damage within 18 meters. Does a lot more damage if you zap them in the back.
Mortar - Shoots big green balls of doom. Good for spamming enemy bases.
Missile Launcher - Locks on to people who are generating enough jetpack heat, also locks on to turrets.
Targeting Laser - Not really a weapon, but it will allow you to mark enemies and locations.
Packs
Energy pack - Passively makes your energy regenerate faster
Sensor Jammer - Passively hides you from enemy sensors and turrets. This means the red marker above your head will be gone. Actively reveals cloak pack users.
Shield Pack - Actively protects you from damage. Taking damage consumes extra energy.
Cloak Pack - Actively makes you invisible.
Repair Pack - Take a wild guess.
Ammo Pack - Passively increases your maximum ammo.
Grenades
Grenade - boom
Flare Grenade - Heat seeking missiles (such as those from the missile launcher) will be distracted by this. If you're getting a missile launched at you, chuck one of these so the missile hits it instead. If an enemy is firing missile at your turrets, throw some flares around them so the turrets don't get hit.
Whiteout grenade - Like a flashbang.
Concussion grenade - Makes you drop your current pack and weapon. This works good against shield pack heavies because they'll lose their shield and be much easier to kill.
Scripts

^ Search for scripts here
What you should get:
http://chaingunned.org/downloads/tribes2/general/support.vl2 < Download that and extract it to Tribes2/GameData/base
All scripts go in Tribes2/GameData/base/scripts.
A script to change your FOV
A script to modify the game's netcode variables (commonly referred to as IP, interpolation or interp. this is sort of a misnomer because it affects extrapolation as well).
I use the following networking variables:
maxLatencyTicks = 2;
maxPredictionTicks = 4;
maxWarpTicks = 0;
minWarpTicks = 0;
This will make players jitter but will show them closer to their actual serverside positions.
HudManager, this will let you customize your HUD
I suggest playing the first one too (to get an idea of the evolution of gameplay mechanics). The gameplay has aged really well.
Everyone talks about how they played this game, I make a thread and noone shows. Bah.
this game kicks ass go play it
I can NOT hit anything in this game.
I can NOT hit anything in this game.
You must practice a lot
Also the mode you were playing is called LakRabbit, it's like rabbit (chase the flag carrier) except you get points for doing ~tr1ksh0tz~ like midairs.
Tribes 2 was awesome. I spent so much time making grav-bike tracks in T2 Construct
Fucking loved this game, used to play construct all the time back in 2005.
