I got Portal, and I try to play the game but every 30 seconds, it lags like hell so I have to save the game and load it again. And even when I do that, 30 seconds later it lags again! It sucks when you buy a new game and it fucks up like this.
It happens with Garry's Mod every now and then too! Anybody got any tips?
Specs? It might be something with your computer. Did it just start happening all of a sudden? Try verifying your game cache.
Bad internet connection.

I thought Portal was a single-player game.

possibly the worst reply in history..
anyway how old is your computer and how good does it work otherwise?
It's definitely your computer. Clean your heat sink, it's absolutely disgusting by now. That "30 second lag" you're experiencing is your processor locking up every once in a while, this happens because your fan is locking up during a set interval. During this time, your processor is experiencing a high load temperature in which performance degrades.
If your computer is also shutting down randomly, this is a verified case, as your computer is forcing a shut down due to high temperature load, which in the end can cause damage to your hardware.
If your computer's heat sink is fine, and you've reapplied thermal compound (optional, but recommended), you are experiencing a software problem. Check your start up list using either "msconfig" in the "Run" dialog, Windows Defender, or some other 3rd party software. If you find any programs which seem questionable or you simply do not use, disable and/or remove them from the start up list, as this will speed up your initial load times when you first turn on your computer.
Hope this helps.

All this talk of lag makes me think that he has an error in internet connection.

holy crap i wasnt the only one with that problem...till my computer died and i got an awesome one...and a shelf fell on it... :wtf:
lag =/= fps lag
lag =/= fps lag
Then stop referring to it as FPS lag.
OP, verify game cache integrity, restart computer, do a virus scan, etc.

Its singleplayer it doesnt need a connection for it dumbass.
This used to happen to me, it was because my graphics card (GFY Nvidia) had a fan that wouldn't start up at the correct times. Making the card overheat to the extreme (115 degrees C) and then lagg everything to shit. Check with Speedfan to find your GPU temps. Also i think it was said above but try and use it to find your CPU temps as you are playing portal.
Things like this dont very often happen when it isn't temperature based.
