Help Choosing the Right Version of Counter Strike?
41 replies, posted
I'm new to the Counter Strike series, and I really want to get into it, because it seems very challenging, and I like challenging games, but I am having trouble deciding which version to play. Should I play Counter Strike, Counter Strike: Source, or Counter Strike: Global Offensive? I'd appreciate feedback from someone who has played all 3. Thanks
I'm not your ideal candidate, as I've only spent extensive time with Deleted Scenes and Global Offensive, with a tiny bit of Source on the side. But like you, I'm new to the series, having only gotten into it this year.
Global Offensive is a lot of fun, and is the most diverse CS in terms of factions and voice acting. It's also the CS that's going to be getting the biggest updates and newest content, so that might be a key factor to keep in mind.
If you have all three, try playing matches in each one, and see which one feels the best to you.

then dont post
honestly, it would be very hard to get into 1.6 right now since about 80% of pubs are fake servers, although if you do find a good server it's pretty fun.
for source i would say just skip it entirely. really buggy hitboxes and hit detection, probably the worst out of all the iterations.
i would say go for global offensive since it's the newest one and has a decent amount of people playing it.
since when has cs been 'challenging'
if you mean competitive look at quake 3 arena, or quakelive, which is basically the same thing ran through your browser.
Don't bother playing CS if you don't have CS:GO. The only reason people are still playing Source is because it has more custom maps (which are being ported as I post this) and the only reason 1.6 is being played is because of nostalgia.

and people who have a vice grip on the past.
Im just going to say go for GO, everyone else explained why for me.

1.6 is still being played because of how well made it is.
better hit detection, better recoil, better movement, just in general, a better game.
I've played a lot of every cs, but the condition zeros. For challenging cs's, I'd say it would have to be either 1.6 or Global Offensive.
Right now I'd have to say 1.6. Global Offensive isn't polished and has a lot of things that need working out. 1.6 as shown by the stats is the most popular cs too.

I believe the 1.6 playerbase is much bigger that the others if you include the nonsteam illegal users. Most of the public servers accept steam and nonsteam people.

Source is the best for minigames atm. If you want 64 player games, source is the only cs that is possible. I loved playing on the hells gamers dust 2 unlimited server dm with above 40 players and the cs office dm with than many becomes crazy. I predict source to be the first to die of the three cs's.
Global Offensive hopefully has a future, I'm waiting for more bugs to be worked out before I give it another shot. The pros play Global Offensive right now because there isn't any more money to win in 1.6 anymore. I like Global Offensive over source, because it has wall banging and people slow down when being shot unlike source. People can run and gun in source much better than any other cs.
You might want to follow this as this, but I don't know if it will ever reach success. It's trying to do 1.6 on source mostly. http://cspromod.com/
Go for 1.6.
1.6 if you want to play competitive
GO if you want to pretend to play competitively.

This
CS:GO

But I can still give my input. :)
I think all the Counter-Strikes have their own merits, and the same "feel" to them.
Get all of the CS.
I personally think Condition Zero is the best CS. Seriously. No one caught onto it though because CSS came out shortly after. There was no reason to get CZ.
Get CS:GO because the rest are aged. There's no reason to get 1.6 besides func_vehicle maps
CSS has super shit hit detection, CSGO is KIND OF better. It's still wacky.

I got into CS due to my friend playing CS:CZ, Source was already out but he said CZ was better, I played CZ for years until I got Source and 1.6 out of curiosity. The old games do have a real classic feeling to them (1.6 and CZ) and theres such a huge player base and of course the custom maps.
Func_Vehicle kicks ass too.
if you do decide to get 1.6 here are some servers that are fairly populated any time of day and night

Yeah okay keep telling yourself about how the "guns feel better". Whatever helps you justify not spending another $15 on CS:GO and upgrading your Pentium III PC.

CS:GO. (Even though I haven't played it.) 1.6 and CZ are permeated by pro players nowadays that have been playing since day one, unless you liked being killed a lot I'd advise against it. Source has too many issues even with the updates they made pre-GO, but you might like the mod scene there.
CZ Deleted Scenes is recommended if you've play Ritual's other FPS outings (SiN, Star Trek Elite Force 2, etc) and want more of that same goofiness.
counter strike online
1.6 is cheap, easy, and fun. Lots of people still play it and it's not too hard to get into.
Source is probably my favorite of the 3. The custom maps are fantastic, there's plenty of great servers, and the updates have really made it one of the better online multiplayer shooters since its first release.
Global Offensive didn't impress me. I found it to be sluggish, clunky, and honestly not very enjoyable.
I'd recommend Source.
1.6 if you want to play competitively
source if you want to have fun
global offensive if you want to be a hipster and think you are going to be good then you realize it's hard as shit
I'm gonna have to recommend CS:GO. I've played at least a little of all of 'em (I've played a lot of Source), and GO seems more refined and more newbie friendly than all of them. In CSS, at least, you can pretty much only use the M4 and AK, but in GO all of the weapons have their uses. For instance I would never use the UMP-45 in source, but in GO it's actually pretty useful.

"I like cs:go better and you don't therefore you must have a shit pc and your opinions are wrong"
Anyways,
I'd reccomend source if you are new to the series because it is pretty easy to pick up.

if you're good at cs you can dominate with any weapon in source.
Counter-Strike Neo.
