Left 4 Dead 2 (AWESOME) but I need help with something...

Ok so basically, I have installed Left 4 Dead from the disk, and it was working fine. Until today.
I ran the program, and it said it couldn't verify the user or something, and simply wouldn't let me play. This reminded me that I couldn't find the program files for it when I looked earlier. I looked in the steamapps/myusername folder and it wasn't there, so I looked other places.
I found it in a folder no other steam games of mine are in:
C:\Programfiles\steam\steamapps\common\left4dead2
Should they be here? Would moving them simply fuck it up? Is this the reason I am having trouble? Currently, I have deleted it and am downloading it from steam's servers instead of installing from the disk to see if it makes a difference.
Thanks for the help, it is appreciated.
Note: While it was in it's spazzy mood and wouldn't let me play, I went offline and I was able to play...any scope for possible fixes?
Also, while we're here, I wanna know what people think of L4D2, and some tips/easter eggs people found.
I found the song still alive from portal, by Jonathan Coulton (Sung by Ellen McClain) in the jukebox in the part of the parish campaign that featured on the demo. Hit "E" near the dukebox and it changes track. Keep hitting it (it may take a while) and it will skip to the hidden fith track, still alive. Also featuring on this box is another song by Jonathan.
Yeah it should be in the common folder, a few of my games like UT3, Saints Row 2 etc are there
Give us the exact error. It sounds like you're not on the correct account that you added the game to steam onto.

Could it simply be that it disconnected half way through, and L4D2 is very internet-based what with the steam cloud service etc, so it glitched when it disconnected and so couldn't do something online it needed to do and shut down?

Oh and thank you much for information. Good to know. Steam has almost finished re-downloading it and I am almost back on the hard rain campaign (which, by the way, is the one it was crashing on so I couldn't play it), and VERSUS MODE!!!
