This is something I've been working on for a couple of months. You can read all about it and find a download here: http://www.indiedb.com/games/hangar-zero-one I'm currently at the sixth alpha release, and it has come a long long way. The basic premise of Hangar Zero-One is that you are given an editor and a selection of parts with which to build an aircraft that you use to adventure across the land, fighting the good fight and all that. It's a 2D shmup, but not a very conventional one for sure. At the moment, the only mode of play is endless mode, wherein you continuously complete missions, earn money, buy new crap for your plane, and the cycle goes on... In the future, I plan to add a story mode filled with illustrated characters of mine, a variety of missions/quests to complete, many more parts to collect, and multiple zones to explore. Some proprietary editors for such content are already at my disposal, but still more things need to be put together before I can start on the campaign mode. You can help me out by giving me suggestions or telling me about bugs you encounter. And yes, the weapons and parts are imbalanced. But I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Special mention: The composer of the stage music (not the theme song, I did that and it's shitty, but this guy is going to replace it and add more music) can be checked out here: http://www.youtube.com/user/CobaltBW
Pretty nice, you should stop by he programming section talk about the more technical side of it :D
Downloading it now, let's see how it is.
Pretty nice, you should stop by he programming section talk about the more technical side of it :D
The most advanced algorithm in this game is the perlin noise used to generate the terrain. And that's not all that advanced to begin with. Other than that, it's just normal everyday game logic.
Well this is a great start. The game doesn't even start up.

If that doesn't fix it, or you were already running it that way, then tell me what OS you use and your computer's specs. Might be able to come up with something. Usually that kind of error is extremely nebulous though, so I can't promise anything.
Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Windows XP Service Pack 2.
If you are running antivirus software, try deactivating it before running the game. This is a common conflict. If your color depth is set to 24-bit, that may cause it. You may also try updating DirectX. If those don't solve it, it is very likely that your computer does not have compatible hardware in some form, and there is nothing I can do about that unfortunately. This error also stems from a number of programmer errors as well, but if that were the case, it would not have even run for the many others who have tested it so far, including myself. This is my extent of knowledge for this issue. There's nothing else I can do for the time being.
Also i don't know the Run As Administrator password.
Oh, and if anyone has framerate issues, let me know details so that I can iron those out. I just fixed one today for the next version that was caused by the enemies bunching up together.
Maybe instead of being given a selection of parts, you have to get them as loot Diablo-style.
Just manage to get time to play and i must say its pretty awesome. Whats it made in?
Maybe instead of being given a selection of parts, you have to get them as loot Diablo-style.
That's the basic plan for the campaign mode. Although, instead of randomized items dropped as loot, you earn "licenses" for parts from either shops or missions. Licensed parts can be bought all at the editor for convenience. So, first you buy/earn the part's license, then you buy the part to put on your plane. Difference is, that in the editor, when you take a part off your plane, you get the money back. The net worth of your plane cannot exceed your budget. In fact, the net worth of your plane is separate from your budget. It's like an investment... But that's how the campaign is planned so far. Could change. Who knows.
Just manage to get time to play and i must say its pretty awesome. Whats it made in?
FORTRAN But seriously. It's possible for you to find out yourself, as others have done to my chagrin, but *and I can't stress this enough* for a reason that is good and that people will appreciate, I am keeping that info on the down-low. Sort of like a surprise present. It's all in good fun. And since the gauntlet has been laid down, someone's going to end up figuring out what HZO was programmed with and this entire post will be pointless.
Fair Enough but please just one thing, was it gamemaker? the loading intro thing before choosing the user is very similar to GM
It is also similar to Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Visual C++ 2010's launcher. :Y
Needs: Ability to Save between misisons, remember what keys i assigned for fire (oddly it remembers my movement, but not my fire), repair costs tweaking (despite downing enemy aircraft i always seem to be losing money)
Windows XP Service Pack 2.
You are so 2003. Downloading now.
Windows XP Bug Free Edition, 2012 Doomsday Series.
Windows XP Bug Free Edition, 2012 Doomsday Series.
Windows XP Bug Free Edition [editline]22nd February 2011[/editline] Also this game's fuckin' cool. One question though, is the determination of if a movement will contain a level completely random, or are there hotspots that are definitely levels?
Oh shit, wrong thread, haha. I saw the "Zero" and though it was the New Zero thread, haha.
I like how I joined a server and it was 3-on-1 (me being the 1, as everyone likes to stack up against the blue team) and eventually came back and won after some more people joined that made teams even. I seem to be abnormally good at taking out capitols.
Wwuuuuuuuuuhhh

Bleh, it's kinda amusing accept I just don't get much satisfaction from doing a short little shooty thing for 30$ just so I can do it 50 more or times eventually dieing and having to start over. Perhaps I'm not good at these but I'm having the worst time getting going, currently have a bunch of shotguns on my ship since I suck at aiming. Any tips?

I've been concentrating mostly on getting the game's "structure" put together moreso than making it balanced and fun. The endless mode, as it is now, is a carrot on a stick to get people to play it long enough to encounter bugs. Once HZO starts REALLY taking off, I will concentrate much harder on making the gameplay more varied, balanced, and rewarding. At the moment, there's just not much to it and what's there is very placeholder. But as far as tips... I'd go with the Vulcan Pro or Piercemaster, they're pretty OP compared to the other weapons. OH, and one more thing. For extra amusement, make your own enemies by overwriting the enemy files! I haven't actually tested the lasers, homing missiles, or shotguns with the enemy aircraft, so maybe you'll run into a bug if you try to give them those weapons. That would be good, because then I'd know I have to fix it. Also, the enemies take -slightly- more damage each round, to make things harder as you go.

Also undo button would be amazing for when you accidentally take a wing off trying to remove something.
I think you should reconsider the distinct character. You seem to have a pretty open game going here, with customizable things and what not. But if you don't give the game a main character, the player could, in a way, could have more of a feeling of control. Creating a distinct character could potentially break that user immersion.

Personally though, I've always hated silent/non-involved protagonists. And I'm not planning much in the way of RPG-like decision-making in cutscenes. I feel that having an active main character would be best. But, I can probably be convinced otherwise.
Also undo button would be amazing for when you accidentally take a wing off trying to remove something.
Oh, good idea. Why did I not think of that... seems so obvious now. Would take no more than ten minutes to implement. I'll make sure that makes it into the next version. In the meantime, you can avoid that by deleting parts via the used parts menu. It lists all the parts on the aircraft, and you can remove AND paint using it.
There's only an endless play mode and it's 36mb? What you packin in here boy?
There's only an endless play mode and it's 36mb? What you packin in here boy?
A buncha-cruncha textures, WAV sound effects, and a few bits of OGG music.
