The player selects a faction (e.g. Soviets, Germans, or Allied forces) and gains control many varied units such as infantry, tanks and artillery. The games focus primarily on tactics, eschewing traditional real-time strategy resource gathering and base development. The series is developed by Fireglow of Cyprus and published by CDV software of Germany. The original Sudden Strike, released in 2000, included three campaigns (Soviets, Germans, and Allied forces). The battles are presented in an isometric perspective with line-of-sight occlusions and practical cover. Sudden Strike helped pioneer the real-time tactics genre, building upon concepts established by Counter Action for DOS, which was published by Mindscape/SSI in 1996. Sudden Strike utilizes accurate in-game physics with houses and buildings obstructing units' view, line-of-sight and firing range whereas clumps of trees can provide cover to reduce the damage of tank ordnance. The game allows units to garrison a building for a stronger firing position, especially valuable for anti-tank infantry. Units can also hold their fire, providing much-needed reconnaissance. Damage evaluation is also realistic; tanks or other vehicles that take too much damage are rendered immobile unless repairs are made. For most of the missions, although a complete briefing is given, historical context is not provided; the player is only given specific instructions and objectives to accomplish. O comeback after receiving much-needed reinforcements. The same scenario is also playable from the German perspective. Take a try! The game has since undergone minor changes in its game engine and now features a higher resolution setting and other graphical changes. The campaign still involves the Soviets and Allies, against the Germans and a new country, Japan. While striving for historical accuracy, the missions are mostly fiction. The American missions are in the Rhine regions and tend to involve 'borrowing' war equipment from the German army rather than using their own tanks and other weapons. The British missions revolves around the actual events at Wolfheze and Arnhem and the attempted capture of the bridge. The Japanese missions are centered along the lines of tropical jungle warfare and the use of tanks is somewhat limited whereas the Soviet campaign is based on the capture of the city of Kharkov and other battles along the Dniepr river waged by the Soviet Red Army. Graphics have been one of the game's strong suits. The destructible buildings are the highest point as far as I'm concerned but nearly everything else is done quite well. The environments are all rendered with an incredible amount of detail and the deformations that result from battle really help you read the history of the battle. Areas that were heavily contested will show craters and demolished structures that persist. The little bloody bodies and the smoking vehicle hulks are particularly disturbing. The list of new arrivals includes some nicely modeled and animated hardware, including the German 88 antiaircraft gun, British Matilda tank, American M-18 Hellcat tank destroyer, and Russian BR-5 mortar. A few rule additions and alterations affect all sides. Generals can now use binoculars to get a different view of the action, medics work alongside infantrymen, and vehicles now have a reverse gear that comes in very handy for tanks in particular, which have weaker rear armor. The biggest tweak is the ability of officers to give nearby units added experience that improves their fighting capability. This is only a temporary boost, however, as it's lost when the officer moves out of range or is killed. One aspect of the game that hasn't been changed much is unit pathfinding. Although units are a touch more astute than they were in the previous game, you'll continue to spend a lot of time manually directing traffic. Truck drivers and tank drivers still behave like they've never seen trees before. I truly feel the nostalgia. Although these games were to advanced for me when I played it. It was annoying because I really loved it.
I hated how you were only given a limited number of troops.
I still got SS1, and SS1:F. Its a good game, maybe if I find out the ports to host, we could hit up a game?
ah yes i remember this game, when i was 6 or 7 years old it was christmas night, mom was baking cake, and it was heavily snowning outside, we were about to head to our grandma's, untill suddenly my brother comes up with a game in his hand "Here, this is for you, merry christmas." He says. It was a game i wanted since the first time i saw it in the shelves, and the game is in the OP, it's sudden strike. Ahh, the sweetest memory of my entire life. All the time "silent night" song was in my head. It literally brings a tear to my eye.
Oh my god, I fucking love this game, I got the Anthology.
Is there any way to get this to work with Win7 64-bit?
Oh my god, these were the greatest RTS games ever. Massive nostalgasm.
Is there any way to get this to work with Win7 64-bit?
Run the game in "compatible" mode or whatever it was called. Just right-click the launch icon and click "properties" you should find it there I haven't played this game, Blitzkrieg was the one that sold me out, captured my hearth with commandoes and went blitzkrieg on my brains. The mods doudled the beautifulness of awesome by x100. Just look at the cover art of the case: Awesome
Man this game was awesommmmmmmme. Shit I might even have to try to find a copy in a shop
I always played the demo, it was pretty cool with all the realism. Although I sucked major ass because I was quite young and didn't fully grasp the gameplay. Still seeing your infantry getting slaughtered is great fun.
Infantry the strenght of an paper is becoming a trademark of Nival. Seriously, I'm not even joking here, from Sudden Strike to Blitzkrieg 2 Fall of the Reich, any infantry squad you have dies the instant that badass Wehrmacht Panzer Commander opens up that turret roof's hatch, takes a look outside, and looks angrily at the infantry. And half of them dies
This game is free now apparently... if I'm wrong and this is warez please delete the post. http://www.gametop.com/download-free-games/sudden-strike2/ It's legit, no viruses. Works on Win7 64-bit. It's a miracle!
Sudden Strike 3 is fucking amazing. I gotta install it again, brb getting disk.
I love this series.
Oh, shit I loved this game! I gotta find my disk...
Were can you even buy Sudden Strike 3?
I played it when i was young, and even completed it, now i reinstalled it and have no idea how to do anything :/
Ehh, looks cool, but I've been spoiled by more realistic RTTs and wargame/sims.
Ehh, looks cool, but I've been spoiled by more realistic RTTs and wargame/sims.
Same here. Company of Heroes for example I thought was pretty good for a while, but after playing games made for the traditionally grognard niche like Steel Panthers and Combat Mission I can't go back. But then, what other game allows you to play as the Finns during the Winter War or the Canadians during the Italian campaign?

But CoH is one of the better "arcadey" RTT titles, it at least does a fairly decent job with it's cover system etc etc. RR_Raptor65 made a excellent realism mod for it which I played the very early stages of, and it really made it worth playing again, but I think he abandoned the project. Theatre of War is another goodie, but I can't play it without the mod that fixes infantry combat to be more realistic and some weapon issues.
