I'm gonna be playing through the Half Life 2 story line today...

Is there anything I should get/anything I should know before starting it? Also, how long would it take for me to play through Half Life 2 -> Ep 1 -> Ep 2?
Also, this is the first time I've actually touched HL2.
dont pick up the can.

Probably a whole day.
Aim for the head, and put the can in the damn trashcan
Jump over the cop, screw the can.
And don't forget to reload doctor Freeman.
After E3 (or possibly one day before the release of HL2:EP3) I'll be doing a Half Life marathon, playing everything from Half Life to Episode 2, and then Episode 3. All under about 12 hours.
I always turn on forward acceleration blur; gives it more of a cinematic feel to me.
Just rise and shine, Mr. Freeman, rise...and...shine.
And don't forget to wake up and smell the ashes.

Last time I did that, it took me about 16 hours. Had a server on Synergy.
Without fooling around and just going through the levels at a moderate pace, you could probably beat all three games in a day or two. I only have one tip for you, use your imagination to get through parts that might stall you.
I beat all Half Life games out currently
Blue Shift, Opposing Force, Half Life, and HL2 through Episodes in a little over a day.
how the fuck do you manage to do that? :S

You've been a member of this forum for two years and you haven't played HL2? Holy shit.

There are some members of this forum that don't even have Steam.
Coolcorky, you're officially awesome for having that avatar.
Someone needs to make a mod that joins all the HL2 games together.

Gmod, Synergy, OC, I think the list goes on and on.
I just completed HL2 for the first time in my life. I could never be assed to finish it, but damn... That was one hell of a ride.
The map transitions don't work in GMod, Synergy is an online mod, and I don't know what OC is.

Obsidian Conflict.
Oh. I thought that was a sort of co-op "fight waves of enemies" thing.

But as for tips, learn to quicksave and quickrestore. Also make "checkpoint" saves (NOT quicksaves) at safe points throughout the game.
Here's a trick that makes the sixth chapter a lot easier. I'll keep this as spoiler-free as possible.
At a certain point, you'll arrive at a lab. You'll be taken outside by one of the main characters to practice using a certain (iconic) weapon.
After you get the hang of it, the main character will call a robotic character, and he'll help you practice using the weapon even more.
After you practice a little bit, he'll then retrieve his "ball", which is actually a harmless version of an enemy you'll encounter later in the game.
You will practice using the weapon some more, and then something bad happens and you need to leave immediately. Take the "ball" with you! It can really help you throughout the next chapter because it distracts the enemies and can even kill a few types of them on its own.
Eventually, when you're about to escape from the town you're in, a main character will send a cart over to you to help you escape. As you're in this cart, the "ball" will hit a giant invisible wall. You can throw the ball over this wall and take it with you.
Right before getting in the cart, however, you're on a rooftop. The main character says he'll send the cart over to you. As soon as you hear enemies coming to attack you, look over the edge to the left of where the cart arrives. You'll see another rooftop. Crouch and drop down to it, releasing crouch before impact. You will not take any fall damage.
Now you're in an area you've already been to. Simply follow the same path you did the first time until you get to the room which is right under the rooftop where the cart arrives. Close the door behind you. Wait in this room until you hear the cart arrive at the rooftop.
When it arrives, quicksave, grab the "ball", climb through the door in the ceiling, get in the cart, release the handbrake, and get ready to throw it over the giant invisible wall. If you miss and it doesn't make it over the wall, quick restore and try again. In the end, you'll keep the "ball" and not have to fight any of the enemies.
I have a habit of typing large posts. Can you tell?
If you go to ravenholm, you may shit your pants.

I only really got scared only once or twice. I remember when I was in a building doing my no-damage run, in particular.
I knew there were [sp]fast zombies[/sp] <-(enemies) coming to attack me, and I could hear them. I was running either up or down the stairs (I don't remember which direction :downs:) and then I realized there was one of them RIGHT THERE like two feet away from me. I panicked and looked for something to throw at it, but it just ran right past me towards the roof (where it expected to find me, no doubt). I grabbed [sp]D0G's[/sp] <-(the) ball and smacked it with it, killing it in one shot.
Also, have you adjusted your FOV (Field Of View) at all? I recommend 90, but feel free to set it to whatever you want.
