• Elder Scrolls MMO to be revealed at E3 next week?

(DISCLAIMER: I didn't put this in the Elder Scrolls Megathread because it is just speculation and evidence, and there is enough information for its own thread.) There's been many rumors going on lately, with E3 starting MONDAY, that Bethesda plans to reveal the next Elder Scrolls game at E3. Many developers have confirmed that they have unannounced surprises for E3, among them Bethesda Softworks, who listed "secret" under their surprise category. http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3179617 Now, Bethesda is currently the publisher of the in-development games RAGE, Fallout: New Vegas, Hunted: The Demon's Forge, and Brink. Although they'll no doubt be shown at E3, all these games have been well known about for quite awhile, so there's no reason any of them would be the "secret" announcement. So the most likely explanation is that it is the next Elder Scrolls game. Now, if it is the next Elder Scrolls game, the debate is whether it is The Elder Scrolls V, or the long-rumored Elder Scrolls MMO. Many are speculating (and hoping for, as I am) that it is The Elder Scrolls V, but that might just be wishful thinking. Because last year, at QuakeCon 2009, Bethesda Executive Producer and Game Director Todd Howard told the audience "We are working on our next big game but we are not talking about it." Howard also said there are no current plans for Elder Scrolls V, but then jokingly said "there's always a chance" for an Elder Scrolls MMO. http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/15/elder-scrolls-v-not-in-the-works-theres-a-chance-for-elder-s/ You'll also notice on that Joystiq article that multiple web domains were registered using Zenimax's nameserver (Zenimax is the parent company of Bethesda Softworks) as their host, including ElderScrollsOnline.com, ElderScrollsMMO.com, and TheElderScrollsMMOG.net. It would appear that The Elder Scrolls MMO would be the most likely secret announcement at E3. Now, all of this is simply an analysis of a mixture of facts and rumors, but the evidence certainly is intriguing. Personally, and I'm sure many of you fell the same way, I would much rather have The Elder Scrolls V than an MMO. And while there's always a chance, the evidence is stacked against it. Either way, we'll find out next week. Discuss.
Bethesda have a lot of shit going on right now, and I'm sure that they said there'd be no TESV in 2010 somewhere, so I'm not getting my hopes up. I am pretty hyped for brink though, so I think I'll be able to hang on - I have Oblivion and Morrowind to tide me over. However, if TESV is announced, I hope it's as moddable (if not more so) than Oblivion, and has some good, interesting side quests. With TES I would prefer a brilliant singleplayer to mediocre singleplayer and co-op. And in my opinion TES should stick to what it's good at - singleplayer. I want a TESV like Oblivion/Morrowind, not an MMO.
I'm not either, and an MMO doesn't sound nearly as exciting on paper as I'm sure it would in a live demo. Not to mention I would much rather have Elder Scrolls V. I know, I can't wait for Brink, I'm a customization whore and that game's customizing looks AWESOME.
Cannot wait for Brink, an TES MMO could be quite good, IF done right.
There's enough MMOs right now anyway, and I don't enjoy them as much as a good story and a bit of free roaming. For me though, TES is mainly about the exploring, so detailed enviornments (like, I saw a picture of morrowind from above and there seems to be a shitload of stuff in such a small area) as opposed to oblivion which gets the outdoorsy feel right but there's just not enough things to keep the landscape interesting. Above: Agreed about Brink, not so much the MMO.
Hope it's just TES5. An MMO just wouldn't work with TES. Maybe if it simply had a co-op option alongside the singleplayer mode, with a small number of players able to play together (small being 4 to 24), maybe then it'd work. It worked for Diablo 2 (although that was LAN and battle.net), so co-op MIGHT work for TES5. But having MASSES of players per server, in the hundreds/thousands, that'd probably be a bit too much. Also, i'm hoping that Enchanting is a player skill again, like it was in Morrowind (although to be fair i've never played Morrowind yet, i've only learned about the gameplay, but I should probably buy it one day). It was kind of a bummer to have to join the Mages Guild to enchant something at a stationary station, even if there IS a 100% chance for the enchantment to work and no chance of the soul gems breaking... I'm hoping for Levitation too, if they've made the cities open-world like Morrowind (By the Nine, why haven't I bought Morrowind already?!). I'm also hoping for more Daedric quests (it'll be interesting to see what happened to the new Sheogorath), and most importantly, more places to explore. (Elseweyr and Valenwood sound like a good combo to explore this time around, and maybe they could add in Black Marsh, as well as a small slice of Southern Cyrodiil to connect Elseweyr and Black Marsh. y'know, the lower stretch of the Niben, the place near Leyawiin) Here's to hoping for a great storyline too, eh? Rate me rainbows for my optimism.
But even then I've heard this rumour a million times before. Too many posts keep breaking my merges
Hmmm.. Maybe The Elder Scrolls. maybe a new IP :v:
regardless of what is announced, I can guarantee you that there will not be diagonal running animations.
The thing about the MMO idea that worries me, is that the Elder Scrolls games are about doing whatever you want, including killing whoever you want. But if the MMO was like that, it wouldn't be much fun just getting raped by high players all the time. But if they changed that, it might ruin the nature of the game.
regardless of what is announced, I can guarantee you that there will not be diagonal running animations.
How do you walk diagonally?
regardless of what is announced, I can guarantee you that there will not be diagonal running animations.
Haha, that's funny but at the same time it pisses me off, because it reminds me of how horrible the third-person animations are. I mean, I'd rather play in first-person, but if they put a third-person option in there, they could at least make it look nice. Even jumping look retarded.
regardless of what is announced, I can guarantee you that there will not be diagonal running animations.
Hahaha not this again, there was a page long discussion about it before Did you know you also run faster when running diagonally in Morrowind?
how do you walk diagonally?
W+A/D usually
How do you walk diagonally?
W+A or W+D :ninja:'d
How do you walk diagonally?
It just shows the walking forward (or backward) animation and it looks retarded.
An Elder Scrolls MMO? NONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONO
W+A/D usually
I meant in reality.
It just shows the walking forward (or backward) animation and it looks retarded.
Well, how should you walk diagonally?
Get drunk.
Then complain to god about no diagonal walking animations causing me to fall over?
I meant in reality.
Get drunk. [editline]05:26PM[/editline]
I meant in reality. Well, how should you walk diagonally?
It should just rotate the walking animation. When your camera faces forward but you move in a different direction in any other game, what usually happens? Your character turns in that direction.

Your character turns in that direction.
The animations right now are the same as in any other first person game, and Oblivion is third person second. Your character has to face where you're looking so if you do decide to use third person you know where you're attacking. If you want to go diagonally just turn 45 degrees.
Well on the UESP Wiki it says they declined rumors of an MMO. I hope it isn't true. Would really like to see TESV.
If it's an MMO I'll eat my own head. Hoping for TESV.
I honestly wouldn't mind an MMO as long as it worked well, which Bethesda is more than capable of. But I still would definitely prefer TESV a hundred times over.
But surely they're aware that everyone would much rather have TESV
I doubt it. But if they happen to pull it off correctly, which they no doubt will, it could potentially become a really good game. I'm satisfied if it's "just" TESV though.
If it is TESV, there would have to be a shit-ton of new features that weren't in Oblivion for it to do well. I mean, Oblivion was dumbed down so much from Morrowind, which had like twice as many types of weapons (throwing stars, crossbows, staffs) and armor parts included separate left and right arm pieces, and shoulder pieces as well. It was just a much deeper game.
Aye, and if it's an MMO, I REALLY hope it's not a subscription pay kinda deal, unless it only counts down your play-time while you're playing, but good luck with that idea ever catching on... I think Unarmoured would be a cool skill to have back, too. Blocking's nice and all, but Dodging attacks seems fun as well.
regardless of what is announced, I can guarantee you that there will not be diagonal running animations.
If they do have TESV at E3, they need to implement diagonal running animations and have that as the main feature of their presentation. In fact, subtitle the game 'Now with diagonal running animations!' I also really, really hope they're not using gamebyro, but something just as moddable but more stable and less shit.
An Elder Scrolls MMO wouldn't work commercially, anyone who's interested in playing generic fantasy MMO's already plays WoW. I'm really hoping for a TES V though...
