Apparently they're looking to have the source code along with the software and hardware necessary to play the games, in case the original technology becomes obsolete. It'll be interesting to see how each of these games will be displayed, whether you'll be able to play them, or just watch videos and read about them.
And to think five years ago it was conceived as simply an "extra" project to stuff in the Orange Box.
I wonder how they're going to display EVE
Over the next few years, we would like to complete this initial selection with Spacewar! (1962), an assortment of games for the Magnavox Odyssey console (1972), Pong (1972), Snake (originally designed in the 1970s; Nokia phone version dates from 1997), Space Invaders (1978), Asteroids (1979), Zork (1979), Tempest (1981), Donkey Kong (1981), Yars’ Revenge (1982), M.U.L.E. (1983), Core War (1984), Marble Madness (1984), Super Mario Bros. (1985), The Legend of Zelda (1986), NetHack (1987), Street Fighter II (1991), Chrono Trigger (1995), Super Mario 64 (1996), Grim Fandango (1998), Animal Crossing (2001), and Minecraft (2011).
List of the full assortment they hope to have. Going to have a total of 40 games.
Minecraft got in there too..
Minecraft got in there too..
I dont know why everyone hates Minecraft. I mean it was a great game! Yes, was, but still. It was so popular on facepunch that notch put a "woo facepunch" in it. Whether or not it deserves to be in a museum is debatable but its an indie games that became very much mainstream which is obviously pretty hard to do.
Surprised Deus Ex Machina isn't in there.

Yeah, fucked that up.
Glad they put Grim Fandango in.
While I'm glad they put in Grim Fandango, I'm kind of mad that once again, no one shows any respect for The Neverhood, which is a game that I definitely feel can be called art.
Surprised Bioshock isn't there. It was the game that got people considering games as art. [sub]Right?[/sub]

One of the first games that made the concept of "here's the world; have fun" immensely popular
Myst was so amazing at the time.
I think it deserves it. One of the first games that made the concept of "here's the world; have fun" immensely popular
As long as they're showing it as itself and not things other people created in it, I'm fine with it being in there for historical value.
