In your opinion, what are the key elements of multiplayer games

I would say balancing. Whether it's a racing game, shooting game, etc. their must be some sort of balancing. I mean, how fun is it running around getting killed/beaten in a race constantly?
Team based squad gameplay is pretty awesome. For instance Battlefield 2, it greatly enhances the gameplay.
I prefer games with cooperative gameplay, rather than running around like an idiot shooting people.
Games that actually require strategy rather then just throwing your units at the enemy.
Games that test Paranioa like the Hidden or Starcrafts The Thing.
Random TK in those games will just get you shot better.

Have you played Garry's mod's 'Trouble in Terrorist Town'? It sounds like the sort of game you might like.
Fun
Yes that alien concept that many devs and gamers seem to not know about
Maps that change on a per-gamemode basis. Nothing is worse than playing the same maps, over and over and over.
Enough customisability to make a different experience for each player, but not so much that it's outbalanced. TF2 was doing this wonderfully (I personally hate the new weapons introduced with the scout and demoman update).
Also, when the devs allow people to make stuff like maps, as it extends the life span of the game and allows the players to be more involved, if they wanted to do so.
Balance and simplicity.
The key for me is when everyone feels like they're contributing as much as possible to the outcome.
-Balance
-Not causing too much frustration (kinda goes with balance, but bad hit registration might cause it as well)
-Rewarding the player (unlocking cosmetics, leveling up etc)
-Enough variety. BF 1943 has four maps, which becomes incredibly boring after a while
Lots of content, player rewards, and balance.
Ragdolls and bloom.

I prefer the complete opposite. I'm playing games to have fun not for other people to boss me around.
oh and to answer the op, cramming as many ppl into a small map. Thats why I prefer bf2 over cod, more people playing = more fun.

What he means is, working together, as a team. You don't need to have someone boss you around to know to stick with your team and not run off on your own.
I like cooperative games in theory, but in practice you can really only do teamwork when with a friend
Balanced weapons/cars
Being able to unlock side/upgrades
Map editing
Enough customization to where everyone is unique but not too much to where it's tedious customizing yourself

Cod 4 on the PC allows for up to 50 players or something like that. Not as much as BF2's 64 but Cod's maps are much much smaller, so the clusterfucks are that much more clusterfucky.
Fun
When you don't have to plan out what you're going to do for 20 minutes, I like to just get into the game, relax, and have fun with it.
