Nifflas' games are best know for their ambient exploration non-violent theme. A typical Nifflas' game focuses on story, platforming and music. Nifflas (Nicklas Nygren) is currently a part of Nicalis, an indie games company who is working on the Wii version of Cave Story and also helps develop Nifflas' Games.

Long: In WaDF you take the role of a failed experiment (a ball). The ball can be transformed into different substances with various materials found in the landscape. Many hazards, including spikes, water, lava, and certain creatures can kill the ball. There are warp spots (save points) at certain places in the game areas. When the ball is killed, it reappears in the last warp spot visited. Environments vary greatly as you progress through the story line. The arrow keys are used to direct the ball, which the A and S keys decrease and increase bounce. WaDF 2 was cancelled, a fan is making it instead however it probably won't get finished. You can contribute on the Nifflas Forums.
Short: You control a bouncy ball.
Knytt - Pronounced kuh-nit apparantly. - PC - Free

Long: A peculiar creature living on a unique planet, the Knytt is abducted by an alien in a spaceship for no apparent reason and taken into outer space. While the alien is traveling through space, the spaceship is hit by a meteoroid and it crashes onto another planet. Thankfully, the Knytt and the alien who has abducted it survive, but the spaceship is so heavily damaged that they are trapped on this new world. It is up to the Knytt to venture courageously through the various different types of terrain and caves on this planet to retrieve the pieces of spaceship so that it can return to its home.
Short: Platformer, find all the objects in a large world.
Knytt Stories - PC - Free

Long: Here you play as Juni, another Knytt, in exploring different stories (or levels) with very similar gameplay to the original Knytt. There is only one story along with a tutorial bundled with the game, however you can find more here or on the game page. (Click the screenshot) The game comes with a level editor and you can install new levels by simply dragging the .bin files into the game window.
Short: Knytt, a new level, lots of community levels, map editor using tiles.
This level is a good example of what is possible.
Saira - PC - Wii maybe - $17 (may be less depending on country) - 12/12/09

Long: Saira teleported herself to Mars, but when she reached the planet all other humans in the galaxy had mysteriously disappeared. Now, how does something like that happen? Saira is a two dimensional puzzle platformer that will be released for PC on December 12. The price will be $17 USD, but for each quantity you can buy a second license for only $2 to give to a friend. The demo will contain a large portion of the full game to give you a better insight into the game.
More: This game follows in a similar vain to Knytt, and is in the same "world". As with Knytt you explore and collect items. This game has beautiful high definition images Nifflas has collected over the past years, the graphics are superior to previous Knytt games however follow the same art style. The game will contain more gameplay elements than Knytt, such as the camera. Great Music. Said to contain over 60 puzzles.
Unlike Knytt however the movement dynamics are much more fluid, much more like Mirrors Edge, you can't run straight up walls or turn in mid-air. (Although you still have control.) The game gives you a camera to take snapshots of whatever you like, namely clues used in puzzles usually accessed via terminals. The game features multiple solar systems with unique planets. Each solar system contains obtainable items to improve your teleporter and gain a different ending. There is also a generator used to refill your spaceship to gain access to further solar systems.
My Opinion: I loved the game overall, it has a great atmosphere, the animations feel smooth and have a "parkour" feel. There's plenty of both platforming challenges and puzzles, especially one of the last planets. Personally I found some of the puzzles hard, but I still loved the game. (One or two)
Short: Like Knytt. Improved Graphics. New Music. New Gameplay. Big Demo. Not like Knytt.

Long: NightSky is an action-puzzle game that focuses on providing players with an ambient gameplay experience, challenging the mind with increasingly challenging picturesque worlds. Each level is broken into different areas in which the player must maneuver a ball and using realistic physics to advance through each level. There are no enemies, per se, and no violence in NightSky. Although 2D, NightSky offers a significant challenge for the hardcore gamer (with an unlockable Hard mode), it begins with a friendly and intuitive experience for casual and mainstream gamers. (Normal mode)
Short: You're a ball, you don't bounce (at least not like WaFD). Puzzles, high quality music, Wiiware exclusive.

Did you get paid for this post?
I love this guy! Kyntt stories was one of the best indie games I've ever played.
WADF was awesome, and ambient.
The backgrounds are so detailed in these games it's awesome. Play them.
[editline]05:22PM[/editline]
We should make a Facepunch map for Knytt Stories.

Would be cool, not sure how hard it is, never tried.
Nifflas is a genius
Oops, it's Saira not Saria. Isn't Saria in another game?
Fixed OP.
Knytt was awesome.
Me and my friends used to do speedruns at lunchtime on teh school PCs.

Played all of them (the free ones) and loved every one. The music is so nice.
Cave story wii ftw
Nicalis is a pile of cocks.
Cave Story Wii was supposed to be out by Christmas last year
Then it got delayed to May of this year
Then it got delayed indefinitely.
Then they decided that they had to re-translate the entire game because it was just criminally inaccurate to have a level called Grass Town that should have been called Bush Lands, and it would have completely raped the creator's artistic vision to have a minor character named Chaco instead of Chako.
Most of their blog updates are "hurf durf look at this fan art" or "hurpaderp look at this uninteresting screenshot." It's never "This is some of the new content we've been constantly hinting at" or "The game will be out soon" or "We're working."
Of course this is all minimally related to the current topic...

Apparently now it's getting rejected by Nintendo on their screening for some reason. And they've gone quiet about it.
But yeah, Nifflas.
Just played Knytt Stories, its so damn awesome. I recommend it to anyone who is looking at this thread.

Damn it. The only reason I can think of for that would be [sp]the Hell level, and possibly the final boss before it.[/sp]
But yeah, Nifflas. Sorry for slight derail D:

I don't see how a game like Sexy Poker can be approved for Wiiware but not Cave Story. They can change all instances of "hell" to Sacred Grounds (the other name for the level), and I might have thought it was the "Curly's underwear" item if not for the earlier-mentioned Sexy Poker game existing for Wiiware. This game would barely (if at all) constitute a Teen rating. So I have no idea what could be going on... Unless the Wii port was just shitfully programmed, i.e. riddled with glitches or something like that.
But yeah, Nifflas.
..........
I hear Nifflas was supposed to be contributing to the music of the new version of Cave Story. What I've heard so far has been pretty shitty. Especially this lump of shit:
http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/26736
Not only is it bad music, it's practically painful to listen to. Thankfully, there's supposed to be an option to use the original music
I think you misunderstood, Nintendo were screening for bugs and general bad game elements. At least in this case I assume. However Nicalis haven't told anyone why it's been rejected so many times.
..........
That music IS actually painful, however it's important to point out Nifflas hasn't made all the music for Cave Story, he may of only helped make some rather than on his own, I don't really know. He doesn't even make all the music for his own games, so I doubt he will for this. He certainly likes to have more control in his own games though.
I doubt he made that particular music.
But yeah, Nifflas.
these games suck.
these games suck.
Not enough shooting and/or violence and/or gore I take it?
Man I fucking love Nifflas' games. Within a Deep forest and Knytt Stories are fucking rad. I especially love the art style and soundtrack(the ambiance). they're really great games.
Update: Saira is now available to download.
I finished Saira today. The [sp]"got to your destination"[/sp] ending.
I'd highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys Knytt/Knytt Stories. It's a little harder, but you never feel lost on which direction to go, and there's more challenge in the platforming as well as in the puzzles. Don't be disheartened though, I was stumped on very few puzzles, and you can always take pictures of any clues you find or just leave that part and try a different area for now.
Also, for $2, it's well worth introducing this to a friend as well as getting yourself a copy!
Besides, the demo is quite extensive too, and no time limit, so there's no reason not to try it out. :P
Hmm, have to update the Saira description then.
Glad you liked Saira.
I finished it today. I had trouble with some puzzles, but I eventually figured them out.
Great game, deserves more attention.
Yeah me too, the trick is too use the Solver on the PDA and if all else fails guess the password.
Oh god that horrible music in the cave story video. Cave storie's awesome gameplay and sheer awesomeness cannot make up for that ear rape it's bound to fail.
Not all the music will be that bad and apparently you can use the old music as well.
Jesus. That music CANNOT be in the Wii version. I mean, some parts are kind of decent, but most of it is just horrible rape.
No way in hell is that going to be in the final product. Last I heard (heard the actual music), the music was pretty good (I remember liking a rendition of grasstown with a funky bassline and everything).
Oh, and apparently this is why it didn't get through for approval the first time :
http://www.destructoid.com/cave-story-wii-gets-closer-to-release-much-more-yellow-154464.phtml
What the FUCK, Nintendo.
SGorilla, I sincerely apologise for repeatedly derailing your thread, which was very nicely crafted. Sorry.
It's kinda a fail thread anyway, I don't think Facepunch is really the crowd that would like Nifflas' games much.
[editline]01:59AM[/editline]
On another note, can't wait for Night Game now. Saira was awesome.
[editline]02:00AM[/editline]
*NightSky
I don't know if I buy that "Ash Ketchum" excuse... But I think at any rate, a different-colored character isn't a huge deal.
Actually come to think of it, the Cave Story blog (finally updated on Christmas eve) said that the main character is yellow in easy mode. They're also calling him "mister traveler" on the blog for some reason. I don't know what's up with that, unless they just don't want to spoil his real name... Or if his real name was a "mistranslation" and his real name according to the original Japanese is supposed to be Mister Traveler. Well anyway, that last link was nothing but wild rumor-milling.
...
But yeah, Nifflas
