It is not a sequel to Quake; it merely uses the name of the former game due to id's difficulties in acquiring a trademark for alternative titles. The soundtrack for Quake II was mainly provided by Sonic Mayhem, with some additional tracks by Bill Brown. The game was made available on Steam on August 3, 2007. Quake II takes place in a science fiction environment. In the single-player game, the player assumes the role of a Marine named Bitterman taking part in "Operation Alien Overlord", a desperate attempt to protect Earth from alien invasion by launching a counter-attack on the home planet of the hostile cybernetic Strogg civilization. Most of the other soldiers are captured or killed almost as soon as they enter the planet's atmosphere, so it falls upon the player to penetrate the Strogg capital city alone and ultimately to assassinate the Strogg leader, the Makron.
Quake 2 is awesome, my favorite FPS of all time without a doubt. Everything about the game is awesome, the soundtrack, the level design, the enemy design, the game is flawless. I had a massive fit of nostalgia the other day so I decided to reinstall and replay it being that it's been 6-7 years since the last time I played it and I loved it to bits when I was a kid. I realized that not only did it age surprisingly well, but it still surpasses 90% of newer games in terms of playability. There's no regenerating health here, no cover system and no checkpoints which make sure you respawn at the exact same place where you died. Here are some guns, there are some bad guys, that's all you need to know, and boy it sure works fine. The game constantly throws new shit at you, I've been surprised to realize that it throws 4 types of enemies at you(each one tougher than the previous) in the same level, while today's games just recycle the same boring enemies over and over again(it's funny, I remember when people complained about the F.E.A.R. enemies all looking the same, and nowadays people don't even notice it anymore). The game is still as hard and punishing as it ever was, which just makes it more rewarding when you finally complete that level after 10 retries. It's still as amazing as it ever was, and if you didn't play it already, you damn well should, being that it's one of those games that you just have to play. Oh, and here be the epic intro. Gotta love the old school.
I play this on my laptop whenever my PC goes to shit
I still have this game, although I don't play it much because I did every single possible thing I could do except play multiplayer. It was fun abusing multiplayer deathmatch settings by setting things to infinite ammo and such, then changing it to co-op and BFG'ing everything. I could never understand why the game case and OP's screenshots had such different lighting and HUDs from my version though (like the Quakeguy's face replaced with a generic Red Plus for health, and the digits looking more gray-ish). Probably OpenGL or such.

Worst controls in any game ever
The controls were hard but it was a good game.
The controls where perfectly fine. You guys probably just didn't know how to re-bind them.
The controls were fine. The game IS amazing. Also, I've had a bit different HUD than in OP's post. The best part of the game was the soundtrack. GOD, IT IS THE BEST ONE OUT THERE.
Tis a megathread. http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=776989&highlight=QUAKE

Most of the enemies (aside from that damned parasite dog) are slow, predictable, and weak. I did find it challenging when I took the 1-life challenge on the Coop or Die mod (and won after 4-5 tries) but even then I had full ammo/health through almost the whole game. I also recall all my deaths prior to the win being environmental hazards, including one laser right before you kill the Makron. I even had an invulnerability powerup at the time, argh. I'll agree that its simplistic and over-the-top gameplay works pretty well, though. Serious Sam, Painkiller, or Duke Nukem, anyone? Gotta love that soundtrack too! I still want to play its expansion packs.
Awesome game. I still listen to the music today.
Quake > Quake II
The music. The blowing up shit. Oh God I got to find the disc!
Apparently there's a bunch of engines for Quake II that change the game quite a bit, some impressively so. http://www-personal.umich.edu/~jimw/q2/index.htm This site is a list of various engines and how to do clean installs for them and such. There's also links to some of the homepages of the engines. I'm eying XP and Evolved, although I might give Berserker a shot.
Great easter eggs.
Awesome game.
