Ok. So I know that I'm not the only one constantly hitting replay on the trailer. It was pretty awesome. But, I've realized something. If this trailer was made in source filmmaker, as all other trailers for Valve games are, then I am going to assume that this is a new engine. (I'm not sure if there have been any threads about this yet, I didn't check. I was too busy researching :D Sorry, I'm a douche.) Everything looks really polished, the moving wall animations look really realistic, and I even saw what looks like real time volumetric lighting :D Yessir, in several parts, actually, specifically the turret being constructed, there is very obvious volumetric light. Also, that small apartment/room thingy? Light shining in through the windows, and while the room is moving, so does the light, and the shadows. It looks very cool. And finally, the particle effects. In the footage shown here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5THiN8szSKM&fmt=22, oil/paint can be seen flying through portals, very realistically (For the most part). Now, I've never seen anything like this before in the Source engine, besides here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXobd5aNC88
And what was seen in the Portal 2 footage didn't even closely resemble that. What may seem to be particle effects, actually looks 3 Dimensional. Could this be a shot at real fluid dynamics? I'm not sure. All that I know, is that for all of this, Valve would really need to either do some drastic changing to the source engine, as they did with Left 4 Dead 2, or redesign the engine entirely, making for some great new effects. Anyone want to add anything...?
you didn't need to make a thread for this
1) Yes, you are Chell. Confirmed.
2) Third and fourth portals (co-op) will be different colors besides orange and blue; they're experimenting now. I stated, "Red and Green, done, you're welcome."
3) Similar to the first game, Portal 2 will slowly and effortlessly attempt to guide the player through "tutorials", where single gameplay concepts are introduced and the player learns as they go. In the end, these concepts are combined to form complex puzzles.
4) A bit spoilery: The first personality sphere is named "Wheatley", a British sphere that wants you to help it escape. The dialogue, as expected, was fantastic. The voice was actually done by a Valve employee named Charlie; normally this sort of internal work is temporary, but people's reactions today have been so positive they're considering just making him the official voice actor.
5) GLaDoS is angry at you for murdering her, but "wants to form a relationship with you". Unfortunately, the only way she knows how to do that is by testing you.
6) GLaDoS is constantly rebuilding the test facility around you. This was known, but the effect is very...eerie, and powerful. It's hard to explain. Like she's shifting reality around you.
7) It's technically the Source engine, but the guy commented how they're constantly refining the engine to keep it on the cutting edge. It's a constantly evolving thing.
8) In co-op, a player will be able to fire their portal at their friend's portal, and "take it over" (overwrite it?). Also, you'll be able to aim and press a button to indicate that you want the other player to place a portal right there.
9) Oh yeah, I spoke to Gabe for a few moments. He was curious how the rest of the Sony press conference went, since he couldn't see much from backstage. I told him, "It was what you would expect, I suppose,", and he had this wry grin, oh, Gabe, you sly PC-elitist dog, you.
10) The team has no plans to implement 3-D, Move, or Kinect capabilities.
Awesome thanks :D Also, you, specifically spoke to Newell, or did you find this from a separate source...?
I already told you all, it should be called the Pourcal engine! (pronounced Pour - sole)
(Since people are dumb, I have to put this disclaimer that I'm joking)

It's a terrible joke regardless

We already knew everything in the OP.
Stuff like dynamic ligthing and liquid physics is equivalent in importance to when Valve added HDR.

So you're saying you agree that they have figured out a way to render liquid...? :D

Meta surfaces, it's not liquid but entities that when close together are rendered as one mesh.
They're getting close, though.
Yeah, it's better than nothing. I only wish they would make new particle effects for the water splashes and maybe add some sort of mesh to it (think of how Unreal Engine 3 does it in the UDK.)

This is still a very early beta, remember.
Yeah, I can see them adding some more shaders such as SSAO and working DOF.
Just watched the demo for the 1st time, looks complicated and will proably rape my computer but wow, it's amazing
Portal 2 comes along with another Source engine update, just like every Valve game after half-life 2.
Clocks, the new engine is called Pourcal
Clocks, the new engine is called Pourcal
Clocks to you too, that was confirmed fake a while ago.
I remember when the Episode 2 beta was leaked at E3 2007. It had a very early version of this fluid system in it. It ran like shit. I thought they scrapped it, but apparently not!

Woah, how do you get that? i tried entering npc_create npc_surface. It was an unknown entity.
E3 beta leak
I stated, "Red and Green, done, you're welcome."
Probably not, think of the colour blind. Not being able to differentiate red and green is the most common form of it.
So, Valve created an engine that they can evolve and add on to while keeping everything compatible?
I'm pretty sure it'll be Source '10, just like Ep2 engine was Source 2007
Hopefully we'll find out sooner than we did with L4D2 (as in the sdk tools.)
Clocks to you too, that was confirmed fake a while ago.

E3 beta leak
FFFFFFFUUUUUUU- where would i find that at?
E3 2007 leak of Episode 2
Not E3 leak of Portal 2.
derp.
Oh yeah because i would totally be asking where to find the Portal 2 leak :downs:
The only thing I'm worried about is if the new engine is really reliant on modelling.
'Cause I'm fucked if it is. :ohdear:
So, Valve created an engine that they can evolve and add on to while keeping everything compatible?
Yes, in 2004.
