I know a lot of us had the PlayStation 2 when we were younger, and I'm sure that a ton of memories are attached to this sleek black rectangle. Just yesterday, Sony announced that production of the PS2 is finally ceasing. Of course, it lasted on shelves probably far longer than it should have, but somehow it's sad to see it go.
This, then, is your place to lament about the passing of this dear friend. Share your favorite games, your stories, and your memories. Did you 99% complete Gran Turismo 3 only to have your save corrupted? Did a car ever run over yours? Did you hold a Jedi burial for yours? Tell us!
The PlayStation 2 (Japanese: プレイステーション2 Hepburn: Pureisutēshon Tsū?, officially abbreviated PS2) is a video game console manufactured by Sony as part of the PlayStation series. It was first released on March 4, 2000, in Japan, and then was released on October 26, 2000 in North America, and November 24, 2000 in Europe. As part of the sixth-generation of console gaming, its primary competitors were the Sega Dreamcast, Microsoft Xbox, and Nintendo GameCube.
The PlayStation 2 has reached over 150+ million units sold as of November 21, 2011.[5][6] Sony has stated that there are 10,828 titles available for the system and that 1.52 billion PS2 titles have been sold since launch.[7] The console was succeeded by the PlayStation 3 in 2006.
On December 28, 2012, Sony ceased production of PlayStation 2 consoles in Japan.[8][9] However, new games continue to be developed and sold.
The development of the PlayStation 2 was first announced in March 1999, and while it would not be released until 2000, the announcement was enough to slow the momentum for the Sega Dreamcast's North American launch, despite the Dreamcast having a head start over that generation.[10][11] Directly after its release, it was difficult to find PS2 units on retailer shelves[12] due to manufacturing delays.[13] Another option was purchasing the console online through auction websites such as eBay, where people paid over one thousand dollars for a PS2.[14] The PS2 initially sold well partly on the basis of the strength of the PlayStation brand and the console's backward compatibility, selling over 980,000 units in Japan by March 5, 2000, one day after launch.[15] This allowed the PS2 to tap the large install base established by the PlayStation — another major selling point over the competition. Later, Sony added new development kits for game developers and more PS2 units for consumers.
Although Sega announced the discontinuation of the Dreamcast in March 2001, the PS2 would face competition from newer rivals; Microsoft's Xbox and the Nintendo GameCube. Many analysts predicted a close three-way matchup between the three consoles; the Xbox having the most powerful hardware, while the GameCube was least expensive console and Nintendo changed its policy to encourage third-party developers, and while the PlayStation 2 theoretically had the weakest specs of the three, it had a head start due to its installed base plus strong developer commitment, as well as a built-in DVD video player (the Xbox required an adapter, while the GameCube lacked support entirely).[16] While the PlayStation 2's initial games lineup was considered mediocre, this changed during the 2001 holiday season with the release of several blockbuster games that maintained the PS2's sales momentum and held off its newer rivals. Sony also countered the Xbox by temporarily securing PlayStation 2 exclusives for highly anticipated games such as the Grand Theft Auto series and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.[17]
Sony, unlike Sega with its Dreamcast, originally placed little emphasis on online gaming during its first few years, although that changed upon the launch of the online-capable Xbox. Coinciding with the release of Xbox Live, Sony released the PlayStation Network Adapter in late 2002, with several online first–party titles released alongside it, such as SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs to demonstrate its active support for Internet play.[citation needed] Sony also advertised heavily, and its online model had the support of Electronic Arts (EA); EA did not offer online Xbox titles until 2004. Although Sony and Nintendo both started out late, and although both followed a decentralized model of online gaming where the responsibility is up to the developer to provide the servers, Sony's moves made online gaming a major selling point of the PS2.
In September 2004, in time for the launch of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Sony revealed a new, slimmer PS2 (see Hardware revisions). In preparation for the launch of the new models (SCPH-70000-90000), Sony stopped making the older models (SCPH-30000-50000) to let the distribution channel empty its stock of the units.[citation needed] After an apparent manufacturing issue—Sony reportedly underestimated demand—caused some initial slowdown in producing the new unit caused in part by shortages between the time the old units were cleared out and the new units were ready. The issue was compounded in Britain when a Russian oil tanker became stuck in the Suez Canal, blocking a ship from China carrying PS2s bound for the UK. During one week in November, British sales totalled 6,000 units — compared to 70,000 units a few weeks prior.[18] There were shortages in more than 1700 stores in North America on the day before Christmas.[19]
If someone wants to create an actually decent banner they can.
I remember thinking battlefront had the best graphics. Then I bought MGS 3 and jizzed my pants. The 360 was out at the time and mgs 3 actually looked better than most of my xbox games.
My mate still owns his PS2 from when it released and it still works just you have to put ALOT of weight on top of it for some reason lol.
I remember playing COD Red something online till the early hours of the morning and ofc Metal gear solid, socom etc, fun times if only could turn back time
Big Red One?
Never had a PS2. Can't wait to get a PS3 and try some of those HD Collections, though, particularly Jak and Daxter. Growing up with the Nintendo 64, I've always loved 3D platformers!
Jak and Daxter best game.
Damn good memories with this console.
Kingdom Hearts 2 is still possibly my favorite game ever.
I never own a PS2, however I did play my Friends a lot.
Hell, I can remember the first time we found that Coop thing in GTA:SA. That was fun
I haven't had a PS2 in years, but I couldn't bear to get rid of the games.
im really upset over the fact that i was so retarded to sell my ps2 when i got an xbox 360 back in 2008 :(
anyone remember "Black"? :v:
Shadow of the Colossus
So many hours spent playing that. For some reason, I never did climb the shrine on my own.
still got slim PS2, bought from my friend 2 years ago. best game for me is SSX3

This shit.
I used to think I'd be able to manage and build an entire city.
Lost it the first day I got it.
I still got all my PS2 games here in a shelf, even though I can't play them anymore because the actual console is at my girlfriend's place.
I'll never forget the good times I had with the Metal Gear games, the Sly series, Shadow of the Colossus, God Hand and Silent Hill. And about 40 oder 50 other games. My collection is huge and it was still growing until now.
The PS2 was the first console I had (and I'm 21) and I got it for my birthday with GTA:SA. I must have played that game for 100+ hours. I had so much fun with it. Sadly a friend broke my PS2 and I sold all my games, but I did buy a used PS2 for 25€ a few months back and got the God Of War games for it because I loved GoW on the PSP. It was worth it.
Big Red One?
Yea.
My mate must own nearly every game for the PS2 as well, underneath his TV is just stacks and stacks of games.
We always used to play Night Fire though, epic game
Anyone got a slim PS2 or a fat PS2 with the far elusive Network Adapter?
I'm jonesin to play some PS2 games online. Call of Duty 3 still works out of the box. Some other games we might have to use Hamachi for, but still, it would be worth it.
TimeSplitters.
Need I say more?
So many hours spent on San Andreas playing two player with Riot and Civilian guns cheat code on! Destroy All Humans was an amazing game, shame I heard that the sequels aren't as good.
If you have a decent computer the PCSX2 emulator can run pretty much every game nicely, been playing with it for a few hours this morning.

oh god I loved all these games so much, even though 8(?) year old me could barely fly a plane I think I managed to beat all of the ps2 games. Oddly enough, I didn't finish AC6 on the 360. Just wasn't the same game

Acecombat 04 Shattered Skies was better than both of those games though
I once played a game on the ps2 where you had some motion sensor stuff on your hands and you needed to beat up people, it was some cool fun sweaty workout! Which game was that?

This game was one I couldnt stop playing once I got it, even though I sucked at it.
(Son of a bitch that image is large.)
Burnout 3 Takedown all day every day. That game requires jedi-like reflexes.
Burnout Paradise is quite dull and slow in comparison.
