• Instancing in MMO's

Does this piss anyone else off? I'm not talking about instanced dungeons or whatever. I mean the instancing of the actual main world in the MMO, which means you and a friend can be standing in the same spot in the game and not see each other. A lot of MMO's seem to have this sort of instancing these days and I really think it ruins the whole experience. I expect a lot of upcoming MMO's will also have this instancing, I already know APB has it as I played the Beta. I tried playing Aion, but got to level 13 and realised the whole game was instanced, which made me stop playing. Same with Age of Conan. It just seems to ruin the whole point of playing online with a shit load of other people. I'm so tired of this crap being put into every MMO that comes out. Fair enough the servers can't handle it or whatever, but if the servers can't handle a load of people all in one instance, the company shouldn't be making the game in the first place in my opinion. World of Warcraft is the only MMO I know of that isn't plagued with this shit, which is probably why I kept playing it for 4 and a half years, bored with it now though and I want something new to play, but every game that comes out has this instancing and I think it's a shame.
Having no instancing in a game like APB would ruin it.. I mean you'd have players EVERYWHERE at all times. But I agree, non-persistant worlds annoy me greatly in most cases.
And why not have them everywhere? Make the game look like an actual city, not a ghost town. That's why I liked higher populated servers in WoW due to the massive amounts of players everywhere making it look like a populated world. Not just set pieces with static or scripted NPC's with 0-1 pages of dialogue giving out quests.
The funny thing about it is every F2P MMO I have ever played was never instanced. I guess its because not as many people play, but that still doesn't really change the fact that most mmos are instanced now. I never knew Aion and AoC were instanced. I can't wait for Guild Wars 2, in GW2 there are dynamic events, so if something is happening to a town and no one goes to help, the town could be destroyed and have to be rebuilt. Quests are dynamic too, so when a quest pops up that could be the only time in days apparently. Its gonna make the game pretty badass.
Yeah, just doesn't feel like a proper MMO to me when it's instanced.
The closest aion has to that is channels which you can change between freely. Usually it's at a single channel because it was for when there was really way too many people on like at launch.

WoW got the instanced crap in Northrend and (apparently) the new zones in Cataclysm will be filled with it.

Only zones which do not have Rifts have multiple instances, which is a very small part of the game, considering the zones you spend the most time in have Rifts. This obviously doesn't include main cities(No rifts, only 1 instance), The Abyss(No rifts, only 1 instance), etc.

You know what I'd really, really like to see? A game like Wurm Online that actually allows people to be dicks and change the world!. Wurm claims to have an open world where everything is possible, but in reality, people just build nigh-unbreakable (and completely unjumpable) fences around anything that could actually make a difference. If you do pay the premium fee and get caught breaking down a fence with your >20 strength to steal some chickens, you'll get warned for "griefing". If this game had some more logic and freedom-minded principles put into it, people would actually band together more for protection. If someone would pull Mojang's head out of their ass (Come on? $15/month for a half-finished game that pretends to be free?)and show them what Wurm could become if they made some changes, I'd play it, and pay more than $15 a month (IF IT WAS FINISHED). This is semi-related to instancing and restricting player freedom, but not really. Oh well. Also, the "griefing" thing happens on most servers, not just Home and Golden Valley.
To the above, take a look at minecraft, it's not a mmo but multiplayer for it's infinite map mode is going to be coming within a month or two.

I think instancing is great, since you don't go out of the city to look for groups or trade. It centralizes the world a bit so you don't have to wander about in search of that last piece in your armor set, you can go to the city and stock up there. Also, instancing means that griefers would be virtually non-existent, providing a better atmosphere to newbies. A great benefit to developers is the lower cost of maintaining their game.

Not only in MMOs, it is everywhere. Stuff are being made easier and easier so the newbie can do it too.

If you're just thrown into it, you will be turned off because you don't know what you are doing.
Need for Speed World, people disappear if they enter any kind of mission or car chase.
I can't believe you people forgot to mention the worst offender, DDO. Players are inside an instance AT ALL FUCKING TIMES. Cities are instanced. Quests can only be completed inside an instance. Basically, this game is walking around in an instanced city and completing quests in the instanced city's taverns, the instanced tavern's cellar, the instanced city's crypt, the instanced city's outskirts etc. I mean yeah, it's cool and everything for like a couple of hours, but then you realize this is absurd. This game subtracts "massively" from MMORPG.
APB lets you choose what instance you want to be in, so who cares ?
APB lets you choose what instance you want to be in, so who cares ?
Only 80 people per instance except for the social districts. Not very fun.
Only 80 people per instance except for the social districts. Not very fun.
You can't handle a pretty much TPS with 1000 players on one instance. I am quite sure it will make the server bleed. And knowing APB devs, their server most likely isn't coded the best way
Only 80 people per instance except for the social districts. Not very fun.
Okay, so your friend joins a full one, 4 to choose from. No way in hell all 4 of those are full. Take into consideration that other servers exist too. Edit: As in, tell your friend to join the one you did. Not that hard.
Instancing can have its positives sometimes, but usually barring gigantic amounts of people, I would have to agree with you that its bad.

At one point almost every server had only 1-2 slots open and it was changing constantly. We spent a good half hour before we got into the same ones. Also I didn't even mention this issue at all so what the fuck? I mentioned it because I think it'd be a lot more fun if there was more than 4 players/group, and 80 people/server.
