So my friend and I got into an argument about what counted as hardcore gaming. I refused to finish final fantasy 6, his favorite game, because I just got really bored playing it, and he said I was a casual. This sparked a massive debate over what a hardcore gamer was.
So now I bring this to you facepunch, what is a hardcore gamer, and are you one? Thought it would be interesting to ask you guys. I have beaten hundreds more games than most people, play two fighting games competitively, and have endless hours logged in on many games, so I would consider myself fairly hardcore.
Having an opinion doesn't make you a 'casual'.
Your friend is an elitist and a cunt.
I'm a hardcore gamer, I eat bricks and shit out rubble.
I have no clue what a hardcore gamer is. Probably a person who dedicates his whole life to a single game and gets so good at it that he'll start being an arrogant brick who keeps talking about "owning some noobs".
No.
Hardcore would be an amount of dedication. What I'm getting is that your friend thinks that being hardcore is the same as being an professional. In my opinion being hardcore now-a-days is just slang for a mainstream sheep.
I play games a lot, but I don't really consider my self a hardcore gamer. It's a stupid term anyways.
I'm pretty good if I say so myself.

this.
I play a lot of games, but I wouldn't say I'm hardcore. Hardcore is a term used by little 12 year olds after they've got a little 7 kill streak on Modern Warfare 2. D'aww :3:
Hardcore gaming or Casual gaming do not exist, there is only GAMING.
There is the answer.
I've never heard the term hardcore gamer used outside of sarcasm before...
I never use Hardcore as a term but i do use casual. Casual is for people who don't really play too many games and mainly stick to mainstream. Might seem a bit elitist but it's just my view.
I consider myself hardcore.
Almost 100 games on STEAM alone, (95 exact), and it's pretty much all I do. PS3, Some XBOX, A lot of PC time.
Over 600 hours of GMod 10
and probably more on 9
I hate the notion of two labelled degrees of games, as if they're a god damn demographic group. It's pathetic. "hardcore gamers" who have scorn towards "casual gamers" are pathetic human beings.
It's "people who like to play videogames" and different degrees of how much you're addicted to videogames. That's how it is, no need for labelling people depending on how much they like videogames.
I would indeed consider myself "erect interactive simulation" player, yes.
I play a lot of games but I don't take them seriously. I believe that "hardcore" gamers are the ones that get all fucking psyched up and are really competitive.
What happened to games being about fun and adventure?

People will find any reason to discriminate.
anybody who calls themselves a "gamer" is an instant faggot
I think categories myself as only one thing is pretty dumb. I mean I play games, but that's not the only thing I ever do.
I don't think you can so easily classify it as black and white. I play a lot of games. I have this terrible habit of not finishing them :P But yeah, I play tons of different games across the different genres. For example: racing, flight sims, space "sims", RTS, RPG, MMO (both RPG and FPS), FPS, and even platformers and casual games like Super Mario Galaxies or this little Sudoku game for my phone. I mean, I spend hours every day playing many different games. (Basically, the time most spend watching TV I spend playing games)
For most people, hardcore means power gamer, like the guys who crunch numbers to absolute perfection, the kind of shit you see often in PVP MMOs like WoW or Guild Wars. By that definition, no, I am not a hardcore gamer. I believe more in the 'feel' than the specifics. It's why I rock so fucking hard at Starsiege: Tribes :P If you mean, do I take gaming seriously, do I enjoy gaming, and do I like to experience the full spectrum of what's available? Then yes, I totally am a hardcore gamer.

I don't think there is such thing as a "hardcore" gamer. There are gamers, and there are people who play games occasionally for fun. I consider myself a gamer, because it is all I do (almost, I am a musician, and an artist as well.), I play a LOT of games, of ALL different genres.
A hardcore gamer is a person that can argue the intricacies of a plot for at least ONE game.
Plus they don't look like they're freaking out when they have to learn a new set of controls.
I love games, but I suck at them, so I play easier games. I guess that makes me a casual gamer.
:frown:
I'd say a hardcore gamer is anyone who specifically spends upwards of 1000 dollars building a computer solely to play games (/ do whatever else, but primarily game) or spends upwards of 15 hours per week gaming.
I've spent about 3000 total on my desktop and 1300 total on my laptop (both for gaming) - I'd say I'd call myself a "hardcore" gamer. And I usually spend about 10/15 hours, so I suppose.

I'm sorry, no offense to you or anything, but this might be one of the dumbest area's of discussion ever.
To be honest, calling yourself a hardcore gamer is kind of, well, gay.
I'm not trolling, I'm just being honest, and I'm using gay strictly in its derogatory sense.

That's pretty true. I'm sorry, but gamer is only setting yourself up for failure.
A hardcore gamer is someone who plays games as their main source of entertainment. A casual gamer is someone who say, buys Modern Warfare 2 just because its the new thing. A hardcore gamer will look for games everywhere not just ones on the hyped list.

i'm pretty sure casual gamers are people who just play games and hardcore gamers are people who just play games and then go on websites and brag about it
