My favorite is without a doubt Strikers 1945. Easily the most realistic and true-to-life flight simulator ever created. But seriously, who doesn't enjoy sending out a squadron of invincible bullet-spurting planes out to blow up the massive aircraft-carrier-turned-mechano-zoid that is spitting bullets faster than the speed of light?
The first ever game to show the characteristics of this genre of game is Spacewar! from 1961.

Then Space Invaders. Which is a nice game, but barely bullet hell at all. Galaga started bringing more actual bullets and the customary aircraft formations into the mix, and Gradius started the intense dodging that is all too familiar now.

The Japanese have made just about every bullet hell game since, with such titles as "Blue Wish", "YGS2000", and
"Perfect Cherry Blossom".
Want to get into the action?
Download Strikers 1945 here!

It's E, S, D, and F for directional control, Enter for Start, and J or K to shoot. L drops your bomb/activates power.
Flying Pancake is my favourite plane.
Discuss!
Are there any relaxing shoot em ups, that don't make you go "oh god, oh god, we're all gonna die" and allow you to relax and enjoy mass destruction of the enemy using a large variety of weaponry?
"Perfect Cherry Blossom"
Ahahahahahahha

Beat hazard is kinda inverse bullet hell.
Instead of one enemy filling the screen with 900 bullets you have 900 enemies filling the screen.
spitting bullets faster than the speed of light?
You're implying the bullets are travelling faster than the speed of light when you mean they're being fired at an incredibly fast rate.
The correct way to measure a repetition is frequency (hertz)
So the enemies are shooting bullets faster than 1000000Hz
No touhou? You don't know bullet hells.

What? It's the best of the games he has listed IMO. The name is actually based on the STORY, and very little on the game itself. Can you believe it?
I like vShmups but I don't get bullet hells. It's all fake difficulty since it requires you to memorize the patterns of enemy attack, it's kind of dumb seeing people say that these games are the pinnacle of hard when they're actually not. Actual hard games surprise you, throw you a curveball to the face when you don't expect it.
Strikers 1945 also made me lose many, many coins as a kid.

I am under the impression that people play touhou for the characters first and then the gameplay last.

And then you memorize that curveball and keep playing.
Seriously. How is this not hard?

Yes, it's memorization but you don't learn that after just one or two tries. Even that guy still dies a shit-ton and uses a ton of continues which means he has a ways to go to beat the game in one coin (generally the ultimate goal of playing any SHMUP).

Yeah, especially considering many fans haven't even played the games. Those people annoy me. I play 'em for both, as the bullet hell gameplay is fucking great, and the characters are awesome as well. Not even gonna mention the music and story. (Partially because that's not what the thread is about, partially because bullet hell games TEND to have great music)

Anyhow, there's already a Touhou thread. Let's aim this thread for other bullet hells, okay?

While I might be a bit biased since I don't see the point of the bullet hell genre I'm always thinking why can't they refine the base gameplay of games like Gradius instead of going down this lane?
In my experience of bullet hells (in this case Strikers 1945) I found myself playing not due to my enjoyment but because of an obsession to complete it. For other games like Gradius, R-type and Hydorah I genuinely enjoyed the gameplay for what it was, a simple shmup.
Another pet peeve I have with bullet hells is that the art assets get drowned in a sea of bullets. You might as well play a dot on screen getting shot at by other dots that fire differently colored dots than you, this whole issue with 'mastering the hitboxes' and 'score maximizing routes' feels like it should exist in my statistics lesson, not in my video games.

There's the reason why people play bullet hells. They are addicting. As I've mentioned, they almost ALWAYS have great, catchy music, which makes you want to return to the game, hooking you even more. You also get filled the the wish of actually defeating the game. And yeah, bullet hell tends to be pretty memorized, but that doesn't make them easy. If you forget about the shmup genre, and consider bullet hell something else, you'll see
If the characters in Touhou were F-14's controlled by dinosaurs, and not just some little girls on some sticks, I'd be playing it.

Heck, if ANY character in ANY game were F14's controlled by dinosaurs, I'd play it. Even Big Rigs. Which I played anyway
Big rigs was kickass, I always won.
(Other driver seems to have lost his car keys or something)
Yeah, but I won the first lap so good, the same second I started the second lap, it already told me "YOU'RE WINNER"

Uhh.. There was this game I played once... I think it was related to Radiant Silvergun in some way, but I can't remember clearly

I might be living in lala land but I thought games were supposed to be fun and addicting.

They are. And bullet hell games ARE fun and addicting.
They just require a bit of getting used to, that is all
That may be true but the learning curve for Bullet hells is just so steep its just not enjoyable getting killed on the first level for the fiftieth time.
That may be true but the learning curve for Bullet hells is just so steep its just not enjoyable getting killed on the first level for the fiftieth time.
But by that time, you're hooked, and you start searching down tactics and shit, making it more of a personal challenge than just a game
The lack of Cho Ren Sha 68k is disturbing to me.

Never heard of that one.
And don't expect me to know the entire history of bullet hells... I posted what I know and what the first search results page of google knows.

So let me get this straight, you made a thread on bullet hell games when you don't even know that much about them past what fucking Google spits out at you?

Oh yeah, such hard learning curves. Shoot bad guys till dead and don't get hit, MAN THESE GAMES ARE COMPLEX!
That's not a hard learning curve that's just a hard game in general.
