Most critics have been bashing Alpha protocol but I'm actually really interested in it. Also I've read things from people who played it and actually liked it a lot. So let me ask you, is it actually bad?
Yes
Depends on what you want in a game. My friend and I have enjoyed playing Alpha Protocol. Gameplay's alright but being able to alter the endgame and play different versions of the same character, along with the decently written dialogue (and kookie kharakters) made for an enjoyable experience.
If, for instance, you enjoyed the talky bits of Mass Effect 2 but wanted them to impact the game more than just boosting or lowering their chance to something-something later in the game, you may enjoy A.P.
It is not a traditional FPS; approach it like it were an RPG with FPS elements to best gauge how likely you are to enjoy it. (or if you can wrap your head around this: it's an RPG with beat-em-up gameplay (which sometimes occurs at long range with a gun) and activated stealth with a malleable storyline, a well-rounded cast of characters, and a full range of smarminess)
It's the first game I've played where I could actually impact the story a great deal. Sure it has its various bugs and flaws (it's an Obsidian title after all). However I think most people were expecting more of a shooter, when the game is actually meant to be played like an RPG. You actually have to use your abilities and wait for the critical hits, to be efficient at it.
No.
I really enjoyed it. The story was really deep and entertaining and the gameplay was fine apart from the occasional little thing. Didn't experience any bugs either.
People who are saying it's shit either have the attention span of a peanut or haven't actually played it themselves.
People underrate this game, I think it's fantastic, sure it has its bugs and flaws but what game doesn't?
Alpha Protocol is worth playing at the very least, 2 times.
I liked it a lot, me and my friend played it a bunch. We had a blast, I don't see why people hate it. I personally loved it.
I liked it because the main character had an incredibly similar last name to mine.
It's actually really good, and most people who talk about not being able to really use stealth probably never though about buying a freaking stealth suit first.
Also, the choices you make can greatly impact the story, and you will not discover all about the story in one playthrough. (Only on my second one i discovered [sp]Scarlet[/sp] was the sniper that tried to kill the President.)
I bought it at Gamestop after Toy Story 3 on Friday, brand-new for $35-$40.
I feel it was worth it, but I'm almost done with my first playthrough as well.
I have a feeling I'll go through it once or twice more. It's fun, even with its flaws.
Most of facepunch judged it from the free weekend that one time. You had one weapon.
I dont quite like the shooting mechanic, I dont know how to explain it, I guess im just to adjusted to games that are not RPG's. If I was to ever play this game it would take quite a bit for me to get used to, doesnt look like a "bad" game though.
Alpha Protocol is an example of what happens when a game studio is charged with making 3 new games from old franchises at the same time. It's not even that big a studio by contrast to the huge ones like Ubisoft San Fransisco and the like. It's a shitty clunky game that didn't get the attention it deserved because other things were more important.
Alpha Protocol was a HUGE upset IMHO. At least I only wasted a week from Gamefly and not $60.
Most people in this thread are saying it's actually good, I think I'll check it out.
It's good only thing that pissed me off is when I bought it it WAS 60 FUCKING DOLLARS, but it's short BUT it's like mass effect.
it's really good if you can get in to the story. it's really not worth the price tag, though. i mean, paying 50 bucks for ME2 is well worth the buck but AP feels very incomplete and more of like a budget game with top-knotch story and cutscenes.
I enjoyed it and dont regret buying it.
Can someone make a pos/neg post?
:downs::
- Gameplay
- Weapons
:saddowns::
- Low graphics..
(FOR EXAMPLE)
PROS:
> Interesting characters and a pretty fluid dialogue system
> Choices with significance that will actually affect future missions
> Hubs and mission system that let you play the game in short chunks
CONS:
> Awful AI (Some enemies will ALWAYS run up just to punch you once, then start shooting you point-blank)
> Poor gameplay (though this depends on how tolerant you are). The cover system sometimes just doesn't work, shooting feels like a poor ME knock-off.
> Balance. You can spec into stealth, sure, or gadgets, and levels can be played a variety of ways. But when it comes time for boss fights, there's only ever one approach that works.
I played through it once and was happy with it, but I won't go back. Loved the dialogue spy gaming, but felt like I was just slogging through the shooting.

I could defeat [SP] Konstantin Brayko [/SP] using stealth and a pistol.
It's not terrible, it's just not good and certainly not worth £40.
Well I bought it, I think I regret it. I'm not sure because i can't get past the god damn hacking minigame in the tutorial.

Okay disregard that i got past it
As always, you can always count on one trustworthy individual to tell you why it's terrible....

He failed at Brayko lol.
I thought it would be an actual stealth game like Splinter Cell, I was wronged. That's the only reason I didn't like it.
I would say a rent on this game, I played it, loved the story, but it was just poorly executed. I mean some of the leveling up weaposns and Mike's abilities are very cool, but the stealth gameplay is broken at times. I say you should rent it and not buy it like me, it's more or less worth about $30, not $60.
Yup
I bought it for PC, and honestly, I think it's great.
It's not perfect, and there where a few glitches that fucked up the game for me, but nothing that bad.
The game has some of the silliest characters I've seen, and a pretty awesome story.
I haven't finished my first play through yet, so I don't know how much your actions have changed the story, but so far it seems like your choices do have a lot of weight. Stuff you do at the beginning of the game comes up a whole lot to help you out later on.
the graphics are excellent. what are you talking about?
people who say the graphics are bad are pretty dumb. it's unreal engine 3. it's as pretty as an unreal engine 3 game can get, save for a few that have MASSIVE overhauls (ie mass effect 2)
