In getting the achievement, are crossbows okay? I played through the whole game without using more than take one bullet but didn't get the achievement. Of course, I used a bunch to take out the lock, so I guess that screwed me over. Also, can I start from chapter 3, or do I have to start from new game?
I think it is only crowbar, gravity gun, grenade, and rocket kills.
You'll have to start again. Also, if the lock doesn't break with one bullet, load from your last save.
If you have a save that is just before you shot the bullet, you can load it and continue from there.
Crowbar, nade, RPG and GGun - that's what you should be using.

Okay, got it. Hopefully, I still have that save. I started only a few days ago, so it shouldn't be that hard. However, there's just one thing I don't get; a crossbow doesn't use bullets, why can't I use it?

It's said in the achievement description :p
The whole point is to finish a first person [B]shooter[/B] without shooting any guns.
PS: AR2 doesn't use pellets - machinery inside the gun is used to impact on a sort of a pastille that is inside the magazine which releases energy when hit.
Just for clarification in case it comes up:
You can use the shotgun to break the lock and still get the achievement. I was worried about when I used it because they fire multiple bullets, but I still got the achievement.
Crossbow is not okay..... i used it at the nearly end of the game, and BANG no achievment....
Man, I thought he was asking if the crowbar was okay to use this whole time.
And just so you know, grenades are okay, but grenades launched from the SMG and the AR2's Alt fire are not okay.

I think I used the crossbow and hoped it worked and it did.
I did all of the EP1 achievements in one playthrough, it's quite easy.
No Crossbow and only one single pistol bullet.
I unbound 1, 2, 3 and 4.

The SMG only starts to get bad when Combine Soldiers begin to show up en masse.

Well, I did. It just seems that it said only fire one bullet, and a bullet the crossbow shots are not. However, I guess that I should have known when it doesn't say crossbow is okay. However, one question: if grenades are okay, then why not the smg grenade?

I heard, don't hold me to this, but I heard secondary fire on the SMG and the AR2 are ok.
But I haven't tested.

If you have the pistol you're either at the locked door or past it. They put it there to make sure you couldn't move forward in the level without a gun. Kinda like the boards they put in front of you so you couldn't go on without the crowbar in Half Life 2.
Is it a fence with a padlock?

I tried for this achievement, fired 1 pistol bullet to shoot the lock, then unbinded 2, 3 and 4. finished the game without using the pistol, .357, smg1, ar2, crossbow or shotgun, but still didn't get the achievement...
