Monster Hunter is an RPG with action and strategy elements in which you will commonly find yourself fighting (or running from) large monsters. All games in the series have an extensive amount of craftable items including weapons, armor, ammunition, traps, tools, potions, and more. The game is immensely popular in Japan, where Monster Hunter Freedom 2 has sold 2 million copies.

Weapon Types:
Great Sword

A sword the size of a small tree capable of large amounts of damage and sweeping attacks, however, it is a bit slow and can be difficult to handle.
Long Sword

Long Swords are rich in elemental damage and are capable of "Spirit Attacks," which chain multiple attacks without the weapon bouncing off of a monster's hard surfaces.
Sword and Shield

The least used weapon type, it is ironically used often by beginners. It is also the most balanced weapon type, allowing for swift movement and attacks with the price of weak attacks and less efficient blocking when compared to lances.
Dual Swords

Similar to the Sword and Shield, it allows for quick movement and easily chained attacks at the expense of a shield.
Hammer

Can be difficult to use due to its natural dullness, however it can be mastered with proper timing and placement of attacks. Damage can rival that of a Great Sword.
Hunting Horn

Similar to a hammer, however it allows you to provide aid and support to other hunters, while still allowing you to deal a decent amount of damage.
Switch Axe

A unique weapon that allows you to change the weapon into an axe or sword at any time. Capable of large amounts of damage.
Lance

Lances are capable of blocking most, if not all, attacks, as well as extremely precise long-range attacks; can be used to easily reach places where, with other weapons, would be difficult.
Gunlance

A unique type of lance that allows you to fire close-range rounds, similar to that of a shotgun.
Bowgun

Divided into Light, Medium, and Heavy variants, Light bowguns trade damage for movement, while Heavy bowguns do the exact opposite. Bowguns are made up of the Frame, Barrel, and Stock, allowing players to interchange any part of the bow that they may see fit.
Bow

The bow is a projectile-based weapon capable of quickly firing while moving; less than average damage, however not entirely weak.
Online Gameplay:
Monster Hunter, when played online, allows for four-player co-op as well as downloadable quests; Monster Hunter Tri has Event quests that are changed/added on occasion.
While Monster Hunter Freedom/Freedom 2 only allow ad-hoc, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite allows you to use your PS3 to connect to other players. Monster Hunter Tri can be directly played online through Capcom's service with thousands of players.
Monster hunter united was one of the best PSP games imo
I'm following the series from the original monster hunter on the ps2, too bad I don't have a wii :saddowns:
I played monster hunter on the psp for well over 300 hours. Loved every second of it.
lances for life.

I switch between Lances and Sword and Shield because there are some wyverns where I just can't do anything with the lance (like getting fireballed from behind and getting killed trying to put the weapon away to run). The Sword and Shield eats whetstones though.
Also, I ordered Freedom 2 a few days ago since I don't have any good PSP games, and I was thinking about buying Monster Hunter for the PS2. Is it worth buying, or is it too unpolished?

Monster hunter boss is monoblos if you really want to know and to unlock other monsters like Gravious and Khezu you need to create a secret combination of armors and the quest will unlock
Online was removed and theres only 2 tips of armor, normal and normal+ (you can only get this one with a high hr online wyverns);
There is only sword and shield , dual sword, lance, hammer, greatsword, ligh bowgun and heavy bowgun;
There is no farm, neither gathering quests;
The rarest item is rathalos plate (1% from tail);
No pink/gold azure/silver rathalos and rathian;
And the list goes on, hardest monster hunter ever.
I love monster hunter for the wii, got the Japanese version before I bought it in English.
