I am a big fan of rogue-likes, preferably text-based, with letters replacing monsters and the character being an @ sign, such as Dwarf Fortress, Doom the Rogue-like, and Zomband. Can Facepunch recommend a few good rogue-likes, hopefully "coffee-break" fast-paced rogue-likes with plenty of shooting and action. Space rogue-likes are also a must. Thanks in advance Facepunchers!
Hellmoo.
http://doom.chaosforge.org/ This is a really quick and easy to pick up Roguelike, based off Doom. It's alot of fun, without sacrificing any real Roguelike elements.
Elona. It's a midevilish roguelike set to a final fantasy setting. http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=573297 Hellmoo. http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=635704
HellMOO is not a roguelike. http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/ - The best roguelike resource.
Why not? Just because it's online and it's realtime? Hellmoo fits in the "What is a Roguelike?" description.
Hellmoo is more of a MUD Roguelike is more randomly generated levels/items, increasingly harder and insane enemies, lots of options and so on.
Why not? Just because it's online and it's realtime? Hellmoo fits in the "What is a Roguelike?" description.
Doesn't really use ASCII based graphics. The only thing that springs to mind is the map. Plus, while HellMOO is 'turn based' the turns end themselves in real time; which while by itself doesn't make something unrougelike, combined with other elements it surely does.
It aint text based as you wanted, but elona is the only roguelike i ever liked, its awesome
ADOM, Angband, ASCII Sector, Dwarf Fortress, Elona, Incursion, IVAN, Legerdemain, Mage guild, NetHack, POWDER, Dungeon Crawler Stone Soup. That's a few from my roguelike folder.
Prospector, it's kinda like Spore. You equip your crew with stuff, explore randomly generated planets (many have creatures), maybe find an unique one. And sell stuff you find to buy more equipment. You can also upgrade your spaceship to be more safe against pirates. http://code.google.com/p/rlprospector/ It's a good timewaster. Remember to buy as much security crew as you can.
Thanks so much guys, I will have to try most of these out.
If you haven't tried out ADoM and Nethack, do so now. Moria and Angband and its variants are also worth a shot. ToME if you like Lord of the Rings.
There was one called Liberal Squad I think.
Spelunky is good, though it's not really an rpg, more like a platform/adventure sorta thing.

But that just confuses me, because how can something be something like something that's already something like something else. Edit: I don't see why Dwarf Fortress is a rogue-like but hellmoo is not. Yes i want to finally figure out what the hell a rogue-like really is. Edit: Hellmoo has text controlls. That's different. And it doesn't have a random map. Edit: Ok yeah MUD describes hellmoo entirely.
Dwarf Fortress is definitely my favourite rogue-like.
