• RANT on Half-Life 1 (Non-Source) Multiplayer Today

I've been playing WON Half-Life practically since the year it was released. My uncle showed me the game when I was only 5 in Russia. I loved it a lot. Now before I continue, this is NOT a rant on how Steam ruined HL1. In fact it helped, since the WON master server was slow (it took minutes to get a list of servers). So anyway, I decided to buy HL1 on Steam to see how the good ol' game is these days. It is a dead community. Here's why it is entirely shit right now: - Small amounts of players (compared to source) - 90 % of servers are filled with fucking bots. They're not good bots either. It's that dumb HPB bot which chat spams and sucks at playing. - KILLBOXES: People who suck entirely at making maps make "killboxes", which are no talent, poorly designed/textured maps. No creativity. "killbox_2010" , "killbox_mike2490850" , "killbox_retexture". Honestly: who needs those?!? - Most populated servers have the shit modded out of them. And they aren't even good mods. Just retarded sounds, snarks replaced with the beta chumtoad model, OZDM (shittiest rune gameplay ever), etc. - It looks like Valve gave up on the game. It isn't mentioned ANYWHERE, no updates, new steam features such as achievements aren't supported, etc. I guess this is another classic example of nothing gold can stay.
Its a good game, but its outdated.
HL1's MP was never really noteworthy and got overshadowed by CSS
Yeah, you'd think Valve would keep supporting Half-Life 12 years after its release, when they're obviously not working on HL2:EP3 or something...
As for EP3, Valve is stalling like mad. Left 4 Dead 2? Portal 2?!?!?!? Besides, keeping good old Half-Life up to date / adding goodies is far easier than making EP3.

Valve hasn't really done anything to Half-Life, you can't blame Valve, it's the people hosting the servers.
The only thing I don't like about HL1's MP is that just about every fucking server has those annoying-ass quake sounds.
Keeping it "up to date" would requier moving it to a new engine. And half life on the half life engine just wouldn't be half life :saddowns: [editline]25th March 2011[/editline] Oops, i mean half life on another engine*
The only thing I don't like about HL1's MP is that just about every fucking server has those annoying-ass quake sounds.
Oh! Nice mention. This applies to every Half-Life 1 or 2 game/mod out there. It's actually scary how many people make their servers include those quake sounds. Also, they put them into different subdirs (i.e. "sound/quake" or "sound/jimbob/quake") which makes you redownload them many times. It's not that people even care about them these days. It's just that people feel that they "have to" have quake sounds on their servers because "everybody's doing it". It's a vicious cycle...
Half-Life had a good run, but it's over 10 years old you can't expect it to live forever
Half-Life had a good run, but it's over 10 years old you can't expect it to live forever
Quake.
Damn shame...I grew up playing this game...single player and online I noticed too and its been a long time since its dead like months
Quake.
Yeh. Quake II is alive and well. And I'm not talking about any Steam re-releases. I'm talking about the original. There's no integrated server browser, so everyone who ever played Q2 online had to be "pro" and use websites that give you lists of servers (IDsoft did have its own along time ago, though). So there's this community called TastySpleen, which is basically keeping Q2 alive and well :)
OP, I do not know what you are talking about, I was just able to find plenty of servers and PLENTY of players on Half-Life.

WTF are you talking about? I played it last year and saw atleast 20 servers with people (Real people) playing in it on OFFICIAL maps.
I played it with my friend over Hamachi, good times.
You should get Opposing Force if you don't have it already. Last time I checked it had lots of servers with real players.
I never really cared much for HL's multiplayer experience. The mods that came from HL is a different story, however.
man half lifes multiplayer was awesome
HL1 multiplayer feels pretty alive and well to me.
- KILLBOXES: People who suck entirely at making maps make "killboxes", which are no talent, poorly designed/textured maps. No creativity.
sounds, snarks replaced with the beta chumtoad model
Beta chumtoad is awesome really, don't see what ya mind 'bout that Otherwise yes, valve usually abandons older games they realease(l4d compared to l4d2 for exam.)it's really a pity though
Half Life: Source proves your point. they messed something up, movement feels so slippery in HL:S.
HL:S is rushed. I have this feeling that they moved everything to server-side in a hurry. It lags like a bitch. I can't do my classic tricks like in normal HL on HL:S. Examples of that would be satchel tossing, gauss jumping, etc.
You should get Opposing Force if you don't have it already. Last time I checked it had lots of servers with real players.
Last time I checked I found only 10 servers
So what's the difference between HL: S and just HL? Like, which one would you get?
So what's the difference between HL: S and just HL? Like, which one would you get?
You should get the Original, Source is just a port, the only notable differences are the ragdolls and the water, everything else is shit
You should get Opposing Force if you don't have it already. Last time I checked it had lots of servers with real players.
Have it. But I never liked it. Why did they have to replace stuff in boot_camp. :(
So what's the difference between HL: S and just HL? Like, which one would you get?
I'm an HL fanatic, and I have both. Personally, I would recommend HL non-source. Just the barebones original. [editline]25th March 2011[/editline] For a proper source port, I guess you should stick around 'till 'Black Mesa: Source' comes out. :P it looks promising
Not to mention original is actually harder.
HL1's MP was never really noteworthy and got overshadowed by CSS
And sven co-op.
