If you like fast-paced games like Counter Strike and Call of Duty, you may not very much enjoy this title. Arma 2 is hands-down the most realistic combat simulator available for civilian use; It is based on a program that the U.S. Army uses to train its soldiers. Arma 2 makes America's Army the game look like Quake 3. It features a massive map - 500 square kilometers of completely explorable ground - and a massive selection of vehicles including fighter jets, heavy bombers, an AC-130, A-10 GAUs, transport and attack helicopters, UAVs, supply and support vehicles, APCs, tanks, and civilian vehicles, all of which are made to operate as realistically as possible - A tank needs a crew of two at the very minimum. It's a PC only title, and you need a damn good PC.
Here are some videos showcasing the versatility of this game.

Yeah because liking multiple game genres is impossible
I love messing about on the editor in ARMA 2 with all the millions of addons there are and I try very hard to like the game but, at the end of the day, as a video game it sucks.
There is another thread
I liked this game until ACE2 was released.

Also, this is the biggest reason I played the game.

It's not point and shoot, it's a milsim, so you can't really even compare it to MW2 or Counter-Strike. If you don't like taking your time, or knowing that if you die it could be the last of your limited amount of lives, don't buy it.

Ace made the game sooo much better.
I was wondering about this game, would my processor handle it?

Yes
Game is rather shit in terms of optimization. buggiest game I have ever played.
This game is truly great to screw around in the editor. I remember making craploads of dog fights with jets. (In previous version I used all stealth bombers)
Its great for all the helicopters and planes but everything else pretty much sucks. I stopped playing it two weeks after I got it.
I have ArmA 1, and it took me an hour straight to complete the helicopter training. After an hour in the combat flying course, without any chance of succeeding, I just said fuck that.
I'm on the 3rd or 4th mission in the campaign, had a bit of fun with the Zombie mod. I need a better computer for ArmA 2.

Trust me, if you're someone that likes to have arcady fun. You will not like this game.
You may not like this because going from MW2 to Arma 2 will be one very frustrating change. And vice versa.

Absolutely this as well. I'm barely able to run it yet I can run quite a lot of better looking games with ease.
there is already an Arma 2 thread.

Do those games also have a 225 km² setting where you can seamlessly travel from one end of that size of the map to the other with no loading screens?

Not neccessarily the game engine itself. Check on the official forums for tweaks and fixes.
Alternatively, you could download some user made islands, and play missions for those.
It appears as if they completely forgot about ATI Graphics Cards. You get artifacts every time you go into heavy combat. :suicide:
Haven't had any artifacts using a 5770.
Chernarus is terrible as far as optimization goes.
Do those games also have a 225 km² setting where you can seamlessly travel from one end of that size of the map to the other with no loading screens?
It's not necessarily because of the huge map that the optimisation is bad. The engine has some horrific texture loading and texture popping issues, as well as model lod issues as it is.
The substitute for loading screens on 90% of systems is the horrible popping. You zoom in to iron-sights and you can visibly see all of the foliage changing shape. It's very irritating. I'd rather have some sort of short loading screens than a shoddy framerate and all the popping although, with the vehicles, I'm not sure there would be a way to implement this.

I like to have both arcady and simulator fun at different times. Ever considered that?
Here's one for the politicans:
If GTA IV trains you to kill, why doesn't ARMA 2 train you to be in the military?
bad thread
mine is better
Hm, makes me want to play it but remembering how the AI used to blat you from beyond visible range makes me not want to.
City fighting is great but when you're proned in a ghillie suit in a forest surrounded by bushes and long grass, only to get shot by some solider in the distance poking his tiny tiny face over a hill with an Ak instantly just spoils some of the fun.
Wish Arma 2 had the detail it does but with the AI of Dragon Rising.
download SLX or GL4 mod. Problem solved

I understand that, but why do it if it lags? I'm not saying they should remove it though, I'm not whiny like that.

The dragon rising AI were among the worst I've ever seen. Besides, in the real world, you could very easily get nailed by the guy with the AK if you fired more than one shot without changing position. They just figure out where the shots are coming from and hose the area down with bullets.

Well I mean their visual range, I thought their engagement range was much better. Didn't feel like you were playing against gods.
I realise about giving my position away but this was crawling in, without firing a shot, being perfectly concealed. Just Ai can see through far too much.
