Doom 3 crashes after applying patch 1.3.1.1304

I installed Doom 3 yesterday, played it for a while and then I installed patch 1.3.1. This is because I want to play a co-op mod with a friend which is only compatible with this version (1.3.1.1304 to be exact) of the game. After installing the patch I clicked on the exe and this message pops up. It says it can't load the default.cfg. I thought something went wrong installing so I've reinstalled everything (the game, the patch and the mod) several times. But this error keeps popping up. I even tried downloading patches from different sites, same thing with the mod. So, my question is if someone knows how I solve this problem.

Try finding default.cfg, copy and paste it to your desktop, then install the patch, then put default.cfg back where you found it.

After a clean install, there isn't a file called default.cfg in the doom 3 directory.

EDIT: the game works patched without the mod, just found this out.

EDIT2: it works now, thanks for the reply. A fresh install on my C:/ disk helped somehow
