How does game developers create a story line for their games? Do they write it down like a book or do they make it up as they go?
yes i know this is kind of a dumb topic.
They write the backstory and then make the game.
It's like making a movie in a way. They write a basic storyline and then make it more detailed.
Games are generally given an atmosphere first to work from, then ideas from there can come to fruition. Allows a general art style and "theme" of the game to take precedence, from there, stories, more intricate ones can be made. Sadly, not a lot of games try and have good stories anymore. Not enough anyways.

what, are you blind? or just some EA gamer? there's a shitton of games with a good story these days. Assassins Creed, Mass Effect, Dragon Age and alot more. just look around.
I don't know if I'd say Dragon Age, the plot itself was kind of reminiscent of Lord of the Rings.
Minus the ring of course. It had the talking trees, orc like creatures, rallying the different races such as the dwarves and elves to fight against them etc.
Some of the larger games have entire books devoted to their legacy. Typically they're Bibles that include spoilers, cut-content and alot of other things they'll never release to the public. Sometimes they get authors and writers to expand on the universe and writing books for their game/movies (Starwars, Halo, Warhammer 40k etc.)
Sometimes it's enough to fill a wiki, other times it's enough to fit a page. It depends, but typically they write the entire storyline, backround, beginning, middle and end at once before they start.

that was the IDEA. i think the first game was just to set the stage. the expansion promises a much larger narrative. and a villain WITH a personality and motivations AND a REAL reason to either understand or hate. DA lacked this and it tore down the actual gaem.

Halo is one game that has a series of books.

The idea was to steal a plot.
So your answer to this thread is "They steal storylines"
Cool.

What? are you fucking retarded? I've played all those, they have good stories. Oh, wait, you're just fucking illiterate. I said "NOT A LOT" as in, not enough games have good stories. Does that say "No fucking games have good stories because I'm some illiterate EA games twat"? No. It doesn't. Get off your fucking high horse.
Hell, I can name a lot of games with good storylines, doesn't mean there's enough games with story lines that are impressive. Games have shit writers a lot of the time, and it's lucky so many titles are coming out with good stories behind them. AC(Weird and questionable story, but I think it's awesome), Dragon Age(Lets be honest, this doesn't have too much of a typical story, but the way the story is told is more than worth it.) and ME(Great story all around, one of the best gaming stories out there), Halo(Go ahead and hate, but Halo and it's universe have a great thing going, with a good atmosphere. So far the stories haven't been the best, but they're still good.). As a writer myself, I can't fathom why some companies practically enjoy leaving stories out of games.

IMO 3-4 good storybased games a year is extraordinary, it's always been this way. we'l have to consider less storybased games like L4D, Tekken and some other lollygag awesome titles. not to forget the RTS genre where it's practically impossible to establish any kind of narratice that won't have everyone shaking their heads.
but as you state, yes, there are way too many games who attempt a great story and fails. i'd like to see more of them succeed. but, again, 3-4 good storybased games a year is the average and it's perfectly fine.
and dude, are we cool? i don't wanna fight.

remember the context my good madman. you just took those two quotes from each their ends of a post replying to another two different ends of another post.
i replied the "fuck you" text with "you too buddy" and replied to the "i'm being sensible" text with "yeah, me to" and concluded it with a very short version of "hey man, you seem nice, should we stop throwing knives at eachother before we get hurt since that would be a waste of energy, posts and time."
reading between lines is an awesome thing eh?

No, it really isn't actually.

oh god....
I think this topic needs to be closed. Theres too many people fighting.
I think this topic needs to be closed. Theres too many people fighting.
Non-sense! We love fighting! But anyways, it depends on the type of game. RPGs tend to create a universe and then a plot. They want everything as developed as possible, and want the world to make sense, at least slightly. Action games throw whatever awesome stuff they can thing of and loosely tie in a story. This is the make it up as they go along option. At least that's how it's going with my side scroller so far. I thought of what I wanted, and THEN I thought of a plot that ties them all together.
Basically your mindset will change between genres depending on how actiony you get. More action, more make it up as you go along-ness.

EA doesn't even make games.

Not sure but those stories are generic and boring and the only fun in those games is the gameplay.
EA doesn't even make games.
They publish them.

Yeah, we're cool. Sorry for going off the handle there, you're right though. 3-4 is a decent amount per year, but it'd never be bad to have more games which is all I was saying.

Man, I've totally heard and seen both AC and ME's stories else where.
EA doesn't create games, it ruines them: Spore, CnC-series,...
Shall i continue?

Deadspace, Mirrors Edge, Bad Company...
Yeah, please do.
While EA isn't great, they aren't bad. That goes to Activision. So get off the bandwagon, you look stupid.
