How to Host a Minecraft Server on a FREE VPS [24/7 Server]
36 replies, posted
I have been using this method before I started paying for my VPS, and just so you know - the quality is awesome, the speed is fast and you get to chose where your server is located (US/UK). If you don't have any money and can spend 30 minutes every 5 days, this is the perfect solution for you
I decided to share this method with you, facepunch, so more of you can host MC servers for you and your friends. I haven't made youtube tutorials before, and decided to start a new account to post tutorials on. It would be great if you could take 5 seconds to thumb the video (up or down) after watching it (if it helped you), and it would be even more awesome if you posted a comment asking questions or just giving feedback ;)

If you're planning on doing this for more than 5 days, you need to make several emails/ use the same email for different hosting zones. phone number can be the same, it does not matter if you use that more than once. However I do suggest that you buy a VPS or get Brohosted (much easier and less hassle)
Thanks :)
P.S. Post what you want me to make future tutorials on, could be Bukkit/Brohoster/VPS related
useful for those that need server and can't afford to buy from hosts.

you know because $3.95/mo is a lot of money
a big cheeseburger costs more than that from mcdonalds
Maybe someone doesn't have a credit card handy? Free is cheaper than 4 dollars.
I think its useful...

But, I can eat a cheeseburger. I can't eat a brohoster hosted server!

128mb dedicated to minecraft for $3.95
vs
512mb dedicated to minecraft + more to host a small mumble server + console for $FREE
you know what...
edit:
I mean brohoster is cool, I have a brohosted server - but why bash other solutions? it just makes you look bad.

D'aww.. edited your post because you got rated dumb too much?
your original post, just in case you forget:
Ugh, YouTube videotutorials.

:3 the things people do to get positive ratings...
Awesome video, doing it right now.
I Would like to point out for people who are weary giving out their cell #, you can use a Google voice number to receive the text. You can disable text forwarding to your phone in Google voice, and have it just get sent to Google voice inbox.
This does two things.
A) They don't get your real number.
B) You don't receive crap on your phone.
I've used my REAL phone number about 3-4 times (that's why i have hidden it in my video). They haven't called me once, their texts are automated and I don't even think they keep your phone number if you're just using a trial. However, most of FP might be more paranoid than I am, so thanks for pointing that out ;)
Awesome tutorial. Got my server working to play with friends. :)
So, after the trial time, do they delete your files? Do you need to back up your MC server files before it ends?
[editline]...[/editline]
Anyone want to test mine out:

On my fifth day I did this:
- Started new trial, configured it and let it install linux
- Zipped world folder on my previous and uploaded to mediafire
- On the new trial installed account and downloaded and ran mc server.
- Stopped server, downloaded mediafire and replaced world folder
- Changed my no-ip settings to the new ip adress.
(Total down time: 5 minutes, total work done = 20-30 minutes)
Thanks a bunch! I wasn't looking for a long term thing, but I have a server going right now thanks to you that a few friends of mine got on, and we're already having a bunch of fun little minecraft adventures! :buddy:

Maybe because they don't have a good connection?
Maybe because they don't have a good connection?
or because they only have a laptop (no 24/7)
or because they want to use their computer sometimes and can't deal with the fact that all of their RAM is used by minecraft.
or their computer will suffer from being on 24/7
or because they don't know how to port forward (lol)
use ec2? it's a bit slow, though.
also, i hosted a minecraft server off a NETBOOK for a month and it worked fine 24/7
minecraft doesn't require that much bandwidth anyway

Atleast they could port forward
I think i cant make server, i doubt they send text-messages to phone at finland? :V
Meh, it ended up being too laggy compared to my laptop hosted server. Plus I don't think I need it running 24/7 anyway since my friends only play when I'm on.

I agree with your edit reason. Don't change it to something where I look like a total douchebag.

This could be handy. Thanks.

You rated by OP dumb because you got butthurt from being banned from my server (and soon Profan's I hope).. lol. Also, yes they do send text messages to finland. They will send them anywhere.
I got a half password into my email, but still havent got a text-message on phone even though i put right phone-number.
I did it yesterday

That already happened, so many empty servers.
One of the guys running the Uk server phoned me
Apparently they are cracking down on people using the free trials
I feel bad now :saddowns:

I hear your services are good, but whenever there's another hosting-related thread you're trash talking it and it makes you look like an unprofessional dick
Just got a call form the UK server guys saying "please use a fake name so I don't think your a customer". I'm guessing they're ok with us using the free trials as long as they don't have to keep calling us. Anyone else getting these calls?
£2.50 for a brohoster server.
Stop being so cheap...
My only problem with it is it's hosted in Dallas!
Even then it lags less than Multiplay servers.
If there were a UK alternative to brohoster for that price I'd be happy to pay it. Although saying that I'm unsure of how much lag I would get form a server hosted in Dallas. Perhaps I'll consider it when this trial is over.
