• Is "Dog" an acronym for anything?

Obviously I am referring to the Half-Life 2 series. I was just wondering, is the name Alyx gave her "pet" robot, "Dog", an acronym for anything? Or is it just an affectionate nick-name?
I think he's called "Dog" because of his behavior and purpose; being a guard-dog for Alyx ever since she was little.

DØg Say it right.
I think it's just a nickname, but it could stand for: Deadly Orange Gadget. :smug:
DØg Say it right.
no. it's DOG
Look on the Combine Overwiki. :colbert:
His body texture says DØG. The old Episode One site says d0g (no capitalization). Most sources just write Dog. Either way, it's not an acronym.
Damn Owesome G-robot
no. it's DOG
I'm sure this is an acronym. Valve thought of this big universe, but didn't do an acronym to one of the main characters?
DØg Say it right.
no
It's possible that the "Øg" refers to his gravity-gun hand. Zero-G, Zero Point Gravity Manipulation Device, you know.
It's possible that the "Øg" refers to his gravity-gun hand. Zero-G, Zero Point Gravity Manipulation Device, you know.
Either that or he's an "original gangster"
It's D0G, and I don't think it's an acronym, remember that he started out as a robot dog, but Alyx upgraded him.
Dog for dawg. [sp]'Sup dawg[/sp]

That's just a stylized O, that doesn't mean it's an acronym.
That's just a stylized O, that doesn't mean it's an acronym.
O with a / means zero. Some people use it so you won't misunderstood with with an O. Valve won't name something as important as the main robot in the game with "Just a stylized text with no sense what so ever"

Valve won't name something as important as the main robot in the game with "Just a stylized text with no sense what so ever"
But Dog has a meaning, it's an animal that's commonly a pet. Dog is Alyx's pet. The slash through the O makes it look cool. Why does there need to be more to it than that? Until they write it like "D.O.G." or something you can't use the way it's written to prove it's an acronym.
when i first heard abou dog (this is before i played hl2) i imagined something like this
It could also be the letter Ø. I doubt it though.
Those of us from the civilised world reads døg as doeg, stop doing it. The sign in the scrap yard says "Beware of Dog". End of story.
Those of us from the civilised world reads døg as doeg, stop doing it. The sign in the scrap yard says "Beware of Dog". End of story.
Pretty sure they used Ø meaning the mathematic symbol for null, not as the letter. Because in HL2 Dog IS spelled DØG.
when i first heard abou dog (this is before i played hl2) i imagined something like this <robotdog>
Well, he used to be the size of a large dog, but Alyx upgraded him.
Maybe Dog could mean something later on [/ep3conspiracy]

The symbol on the texture is a 0 anyway. And clearly it's a stylisation. You don't spell Valve as VALVe either.
He's built from salvaged tech, and DØG might just be part of a serial number on whatever was torn apart. I think the lettering appears somewhere near his head IIRC.
Obviously DOG means "Dog" as in the creature. Because he is very much like one. However, what we're discussing is the possibility of an Acronym. I still stand by my zero-g / gravity gun hands theory.
It's possible that the "Øg" refers to his gravity-gun hand. Zero-G, Zero Point Gravity Manipulation Device, you know.
Yeah I think it stands for Dog Øg (Zero Point Gravity Manipulation Device) because he has a bulit in Zero Point Gravity Manipulation Device if I remeber correctly.
