Something's been bothering me ever since the period of time in which Portal 2 takes place was announced. It is supposed to be "200 years in the future" (correct me if I'm wrong), but I'm just thinking, "maybe it's only been 10, maybe 20 years? Maybe you're just being told otherwise. You have no idea how much time has passed outside the facility!".
Also, this is a Valve game. There must be a huge twist further on in the game, else it'd just be a puzzle game, exact same as Portal.
I don't know if I'm just hopeful :(
I think its 100 years. But I might be wrong. I don't think GLaDOS ever tells you its 200/100 years in the future. I thought VALVe said that.
It's 100 years.
it's not 100 years.. it's hundreds of years.
200 would be the minimum.
Hundreds. Could be anywhere from 101 - infinity (though what we've seen tells us its probably less than 500)
I guess we can rest easy that the entire world is not going to asplode in Half-Life 2: Episode 3 at least.
I also have my doubts about the time that passed. I mean, Portal is kind of about being lied to, so why should it be different this time? The other thing is, the facility is in too good of a condition. I mean, look at IRL objects which have been abandoned for just 10 years, and sometimes they even look worse than how the Aperture labs look in Portal 2, after supposedly a couple hundred years.
One word can answer all questions
Robots.
It takes place 100 years INTO THE FUTURE
Otherwise it would counter with the HL2 story.
Even though at the end of portal 2, if you see its normal you know humanity won.
:colbert:
Unless VALVe decides to dissolve the entire Portal/Half-Life connection, I'll be a very unhappy camper in Portal 2. It's an indirect spoiler that humanity won.
I always prefer to think that Portal is during the Seven Hour War, and when you defeat GLaDOS, the humans begin to lose. ("I'm the only one who stands between us and them.") Then GLaDOS may say 200 years, when it was only 20, being around the point of Half-Life 2.
I'm wrong, I know. But that's my theory.
Btw, didn't Marc say once that they were considering having Chell appear sometime in a Half-Life game?

Not to mention all the Black Mesa posters and the official timeline thing they did during the gameinformer exclusives.
Because Glados lies to you. VALVe does NOT lie to you. It is 100-200 years.
This makes me wonder what the ending to Portal 2 will be.
Will it end with some surprise that will lead into a new Half Life?
Will it end with some other cliffhanger that could lead into a Portal 3?
Or will it just end with a conclusion to the Portal franchise?
This thread made me think about this for some reason. It's way too early to be thinking about the ending.

Hell yeah. We don't even know the plot yet. Waaay to early.
It's not 100 years, it is hundreds.
There's a difference between hinting and blatant lies. If Valve said it's hundreds of years, why would it be otherwise? It makes no sense. It's like when people thought Gabe lied when he told them the surprise was NOT Ep3 then people got pissed when, surprise surprise, there was so EP3 at E3.
Bottom line, you have no point. Valve said hundreds of years, they wouldn't just say that then in the game they were all "ololol jk it's been like 10 yrs only"

If you thought that's what would happen you need to seriously gb2school

That would be sexy

What are you smoking?
Whilst Valve doesn't exactly "lie" to us they have definitely enhanced the truth before, and that could be the case this time. :colbert:
Well seeing as how plant life has barged into the facility it would take more than 10 years for that to happen.
It was originally stated that Portal 2 took about 100 years after the events of Portal.
However, Valve has then gone to say that it takes place hundreds of years after Portal.
I'm more inclined to believe that it's taken about 100 years after Portal.
if it's hundreds of years how are you (chell) still alive? did over usage of portals cause some kind of jump through time?

The Party Escort Bot was added to the end of Portal to explain this - you're carried away and kept in stasis.
