Am I the only person having problems making a non-laggy SMP server?

It seems like i'm the only person out there that can't make a non-laggy server. Every time I start a server it's very laggy - for all players chunks take a long time to load, breaking blocks does not give items for the inventory, mobs ignore players, damage is delayed by at least three minutes, etc. It was fine in 1.2 and now it's been broke from 1.3 onward. Is there someone else out there with the same problem?

Try turning off friendly mobs. They made the server that my friend and I tried to make lag unbearably. After they were turned off, there was still lag but not nearly as much.

Oh yes! I actually had to load the world in singleplayer just to generate the world so that I could play in multiplayer without lagging. And still, whenever I go in any direction and uncover new world, it starts lagging SO hard, it's not even funny.

Silly OP. Non-laggy SMP servers are just a myth.

I have very same issue playing on ANY SMP server. Was fine in 1.2, but in 1.3-1.4 it broke. Its not server related for sure. As in that same server with the lag, 5 other people can play fine, and its only me that has it in the server i play on.
