Battlefield 3 and the Frostbite engine looked quite impressive during the game's GDC debut, and publisher Electronic Arts has made it known for some time now that they won't stop fighting until they've taken back the shooter crown from rival Activision. Talking to a group of marketers at the Ad Age conference, EA boss John Ricitiello explained to the audience that his company is very serious about toppling Call of Duty this fall with the release of Battlefield 3.
After showing them a demo, he proclaimed, referring to Activision's Call of Duty, "This game is designed to take down that game." He categorized it as a "battle of the titans", a rivalry like Red Sox versus Yankees or Microsoft versus Google. Riccitiello also noted that there will be a "couple hundred million dollars of marketing going against these two products going head-to-head."
Ultimately, Riccitello declared, "We think we've got the better product."
Call of Duty is so firmly entrenched in the gaming community that it's definitely going to be challenge for EA. Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter told us last month that Battlefield 3 doesn't stand a chance of edging out Call of Duty this fall.
Marketing is everything. Or is it?
holy jesus shit
Cool.
So they're trying to sell to mainstream gamers and make them their market.
nnoooooooooooooooooo- I am crying, I am crying tears.
I don't want the call of duty fanbase playing battlefield.

There's probably a huge crossover.

I don't want them appealing to the call of duty gamers. I like battlefield because it's battlefield, you know?
I seriously doubt it'll beat MW3. CoD has already established far too much popularity. Where I live the majority of people who play videogames are infuriatingly chauvinistic about CoD.
I fully support this. It's not like they're compromising the Battlefield style gameplay to attract COD players, they're just advertising more and showing how awesome their game is. CODs time was over as soon as MW2 came out, it's time for a new king to take throne.
Don't worry. Most will spend $60 on it, say it sucks, and go back to CoD. The few who stay on will stay because they appreciate the slower pace and the Battlefield ideology. Its a win win for BF fans and DICE.
Only way to make a fake "good" game is to make a blatantly obvious better game. GO BATTLEFIELD WOO!!!
Well... it's about time a new beast reigns the FPS genre. Maybe EA can pull this off. Only time will tell.
wait, it's taking down CoD? Isn't that like... going backwards?
I'm fine with COD fanboys playing battlefield, it's not like they can use COD tactics without getting their asses handed to them. It's good to have a little cannon fodder.
Is this going to be like WoW where everyone advertises as being the CoD killer?
It will beat it in terms of gameplay, graphics and true innovation for this day and age of FPS games. But it won't sell as much, because it is inherently more complex than CoD will ever be.
I kind of wish DICE would hop off the CoDkiller bandwagon, BC2 suffered due to it, I don't want to see the same happen to BF3.

True, though amazingly thats not saying much since BF2 was really not that complicated. CoD really does appeal to the lowest common denominator.. though.
I doubt they are going to "take down" anything, I think people are just going to be buying a lot of games this year.
I don't think EA will be able to pull this off.
STOP trying to beat CoD and stay true to the BF feel.
Also, LEARNING CURVES.
It won't work.

I don't want it to become the #1 most played game and have every single person talking about it. It's what wore out CoD for me twenty times faster than it should have, hearing about the same thing over and over makes you get sick of something.

what the fuck
" I don't want the call of duty fanbase playing battlefield. "
THISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHIS!!!
i don't think a thread about cod is a good excuse to pull out your ego and start waving it around

Getting sick of hearing about something over and over again=hipster?

This is just the boss of EA saying this. DICE has said multiple times they are making a true sequel to BF2.
I doubt they are lying to us about that.
Getting sick of hearing about something over and over again=hipster?
pretty much
I am way more hyped about BF3 than I am with the next CoD installment. I need something new to sink my teeth into y'know?
Getting sick of hearing about something over and over again=hipster?
he was making a joke, hipsters don't like to be mainstream - therefore he was saying you were a hipster for not liking cod.

The way you worded it made it sound like you started to hate it just because it became popular. A pretty hipster thing to say.
Hell when it comes to games most people on Facepunch are hipsters.
