• What is Steam thinking with the new UI?

Steam recently released the new UI beta to use. Don't get me wrong it looks good, but it has too many flaws when compared to the old/current looks. Instead of writing 5 huge paragraphs ranting about how much I hate it, I'm going to just post screen shots with some little comments on them. The background color fades from light to dark on top.. which is very impractical when you're chatting, and is quite distracting. The text color difference is no longer useful - where before your text was gray and everyone else's text was bright white. Now yours is dark gray and their text is light gray. The top of steam is like 15 centimeters long (huge) and takes too much space from the screen. Here's my current fix for this issue, but unfortunately lots of people will like the change, like it's some new Facebook UI change or something, and make themselves like it, so everyone will eventually have to use it. I like the new additions to the rest of the site (don't get me wrong, I like the new tools and new options) I just have a problem with the UI. I think it's cool that it shows you more information about your gaming, and the amount of users that access Steam at a given time with the graph. But I say no to the look. That's why it's a beta.
But it's great.
Snip - didn't see that it was about UI Beta. Well, it does look sorta nasty, but that's beta for ya! :-) I really do like the new "Games" page. I just don't like the font for some things.
Its extremely choppy and laggy.
Its extremely choppy and laggy.
I haven't experienced the lag -- yet again I only spent 20 minutes on it before I rage quit.
I honestly like the look because the old interface looks like it crawled from 1998. My guess about the fade to black is that it leads your eyes to the bottom of the conversation, where new information is going to be.
I like how that guy is calling you a fag yet he has a picture of a Pokemon as is profile picture.
You're right. I saw some lag and it bugs me. I loved the old steam, it was clean and simple. They're pulling a Vista: making it pretty and losing some of its smoothness.
:iia:

Oh yay, more unasked graphical upgrades that will stress my already graphically overstressed machine even more, thank you steam for recognizing those of us who can't afford to buy custom and upgrade every year or two! Nice to know you're looking out for us.
You mean Valve, Steam is only the program. I've been having the crash problem but it's getting fixed.
I don't like the gradients but everything else is awesome.
The fade is only distracting if you're retarded and have some attention disorder
Boo hoo. Wait a week until skin makers change it, or even better, make a skin yourself. All the enhancements of the new UI with none of your complaints. (except the tray icon, but that's hardly an issue.)
* New style and layout system for Steam's VGUI UI toolkit, enabling much more complicated flowing layouts. Skins will need major overhauls to be compatible with the new client, but will also have much more power and flexibility available to them via the new .style and .layout files used in the new VGUI code. * New outer glow effect supported when rendering text in VGUI * Support for alpha blending of gradients and text in VGUI * Support for many new layout and placement commands in VGUI
And i know it's bugged and crashy but it's a beta.
" CRY SOME MOAR!! " "baby"
It's fine. I just wish it was darker.
AHEM. CUSTOM UI'S! Or OTHER SETTINGS. You can change the UI you know.
Got a problem with that?
I see I have angered the Pokegods :suicide:
I like.
To be fair, you've got the window stretched to the size of the whole screen, which is only 1024x768.
I like it. I'm guessing that you just can't accept change which I can't really blame you for.
It didn't load the menu font for me... All drop down menus were just empty... It was a pain to find the right menu and set it back. Anyone else had this problem?
Works fantastic for me, and looks fantastic. I love it, I was just thinking the other day the old Steam UI was really outdated.
I think its pretty awesome. My only complaints are LOTS OF GRADIENTS No more mini-game list window But I think the fact that THE IN GAME BROWSER USES MOTHER FUCKING CHROME makes up for everything.
thats a whole lotta :goonsay: for one thread.
