At first i thought fuck yeah! my xbox somehow downloaded wallhacks and i had my best game ever of 103-9 but then it red ringed e74

so what to do... ?
have sex with it
Repair it yourself to keep wallhacks.
Go to the Xbox site and enter your Code on the back of the console to check if you have a warranty, if you do then just send it for repairs... Usually doesn't take as long as people tell you.
For me it took a week.
Also i think E74 has something to do with a chip in the 360.
E74 is similar to RRoD. My xbox got the E74 error and then sent it off to 3rd party insurance I had with GAME and then I don't think they fixed it properly and basically 1 week later I had RRoD. Really did suck.

I think E74 is a almost irreparable error, so they probably sent you a refurbished console instead.

shit do i get to keep my hardrive?
You can file for repairs all online, you don't even have to talk to anyone. They will send you a pre-paid box most of the times too, so it costs nothing.

Remove it before sending it in, they may or may not work on the console, but if they do they shouldn't send a new drive back.
You can keep your harddrive. I did anyway.

Took me 3 weeks. From UK to Germany and Back, during Christmas.
2 weeks from Canada to whoknowswhere.

Sledge hammers work wonders on RRoD cases.
Funny, my Xbox E74'd just yesterday. Good thing it's still under the 3 year warranty.

I got mine back in a week as well.
I have gotten this error as well, along with the error 73.
The way I fixed the error 73 was by forcing the xbox to overheat until one of the solder points melts back into place.
After doing this to many times, I received error 74. I have found out that error 74 has something to do with the heat sink on top the processor. To my knowledge, the heat sink's Thermal Glue has heated to the point that the heat sink has loosened a bit off of the 360.
I have fixed this e74 error by putting the 360 on it's back, and applying pressure with my foot along the center of the 360, pushing down. Not too hard, and don't use your entire body weight. Make sure your 360 has been on for at least 10 minutes so it can warm up, possibly allowing the heat sink to be pushed back into place easier.
I hope this helped, red rings are a bitch.
Good news everyone! My xbox is still in warranty and will be shipped to microshit tomorrow.

Soz babes :L
Happened to mine then I fixed it with toothpicks, then I turned it on to test if the toothpicks had worked.. they had but it then had RROD, so I fixed that by overheating the bitch then it would last between 2 hours - 3 minutes. I think I broke a record for the most RROD's on the one console. It would have RROD'ed about 70 or so times.
