There have been and always will be those games that are just impossible. Post your mind-numbingly difficult titles here, along with a reason why they were so hard.
I'll start.
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts (SNES)
A classic arcade-style side-scrolling platformer where you play as Arthur, some knight who throws shit at monsters to save the princess... or whatever. Well, for starters, 2 hits and you're dead. The first hit removes all armor from you (no matter what type of armor you're wearing) leaving you in your boxers, helpless. There are other cruel tricks the game throws at you. Occasionally, when opening a chest, a wizard will come out and attempt to cast a spell at you. Should you be hit with said spell, you are temporarily disarmed and turned into either a slow-moving baby, a woman (:v:), or a seal. Should a zombie happen to cross your path during said seal-time, you're boned. The final stinger in this classic rage-inducing title is this: once you reach the second to last level and are all geared up to fight the final boss, you're told to repeat the game using some horrible wand-type thing. If you reach the end of the game without the wand, you're sent back to the beginning again. Now tell me that isn't a slap in the face. Oh, did I mention it's just really hard? Not much I can describe here, maybe you should just go experience the madness. On normal mode, I can rarely pass the first level alone. I'll be perfectly honest here, I've never made past the second level. There are 8 in the total, each exponentially more difficult. And don't forget, you'll have to repeat them all over with a shitty wand to play the final ending.

Spelunky can be quite challenging but also very rewarding.
Stalker SoC. Ran out of everything in the sarcophagus.
EDIT: Also, Contra.
Silver Surfer for the NES or something.
You couldn't hit ANYTHING, and you had to dodge every single projectile. So, in few words, you had to dodge every single thing in the game.
Battletoads. In the next-to-last level you have to have spot-on timing or you'll be killed and sent back to the beginning.
The best part is that a store nearby has a copy of it. I'm going to play it with my dad.
devil may cry 3

Boat-o-cross
cause everyone knows that being underwater means physics gets it's head shoved up it's arse
Goldeneye:Rouge agent
The spongebob boating game. I doubt anyone has ever got past level 2, apparantly physics don't exist underwater.
IMO Ninja Gaiden is really damn hard.
Taz-Mania for the Mega Drive/Genesis while difficulty set to "Hard"
Superman 64
Demon's Souls.
X-Com: Ufo Defense and X-Com: Terror from the Deep.
STOP MIND CONTROLLING MY MEN!!!!
Star Wars The Force Unleashed on Hardest Difficulty.
Men of War
Well, maybe it's hard because I just suck at RTS's.
I second Super Ghosts and Ghouls jesus christ.
IMO Ninja Gaiden is really damn hard.
Ninja Gaiden Black on Master Ninja is pure torture, definitely the hardest game I have ever played by far.
DMC3 or 4 (original) forgot which one.
Diddy Kong Racing 64
Ninja gaiden.
I find Crash Bandicoot 1 to be really, really hard. I barely beated it, and I had to cheat in order to do so. The very last map of Stalker: SoC (CNPP North) is also really frustrating, particulary because at the last teleport Monolithians in strongest armor spawn around you, making it near impossible to get through if you're using and exoskeleton because you can't sprint between them before they reach for their guns.

I hate the fact that you can't use the Analogue stick. Using the D-Pad in a 3D environment is ridiculously difficult.

I actually preffer to use the D-Pad in platformer games.
Also, that fucking bridge. :argh: I ragequitted the first time I played the game.
The spongebob boating game. I doubt anyone has ever got past level 2, apparantly physics don't exist underwater.
I got to level 4, took me 2 tries. I also screen-capped it. However, I can't find it D: I think I deleted it

To be honest, it's not that hard, it's more about memorization than actual reflexes and skills.
