What is that thing up there? Something for accountants? Another way to input numbers? A calculator without a screen? You don't know because for some reason you didn't know it was even on your keyboard?
YOU FOOL.
That sexy piece of keys is a Keypad AKA the ultimate PC gaming device for sexy PC gamers such as yourself.
I use the keypad primarily for Shooters and I personally like it more than the traditional WASD. I do not know a single person besides my dad (who did this before me) and my cousin (I showed him) who uses these. So here I am to inform you on the awesomeness that is the KEYPAD

Up there is the absolute basic setup for a shooter. Some games I may have to change it up a bit (like Battlefield Bad Company 2) and very few I simply cannot get a good control set up (Arma 2).
Once you got that setup, you have two choices. Choice one, use the keypad on your keyboard.
Choice two The Cool Kid Choice a USB keypad

USB Keypad, the cool kid keypad
I like this because I can push that giant keyboard away and have much more room on my desk for other important things like Oreos.
Now once that's all set up, you can now play a game with your amazing new control keys! It's that easy.
Reasons Why I prefer the Keypad
Keys are closer together which allows me to press them faster
I won't accidentally hit the Windows Key
My Ctrl Key takes more effort then it should to hold down, making crouching harder
More Room
I feel like a boss
Some things to look out for
Some games (mainly ports) the number 5 key will not work.
Some people (like my dad) prefer using 2 instead of 5 to move backwards
If you do not use a USB keypad, there will be an annoying big chunk of keyboard pushed to the side.
Rarely, the numlock can cause bad things to happen to you when you push it, such as locked running.
So I would like some of you to give it a try, see how you like it. I would also like to know if anyone else uses this.
Yes this is my first post/thread, yes I don't know what to use to post images besides image shack and yes I want you to give sexy keypad a chance.
WELL judging from the amount of dumbs and disagrees, not only do people not do it, people think it's a terrible setup.
I guess I'm a hipster when it comes to game controls
I'm use keypads all the time in muds (SimpleMU :smug:) and roguelikes. Anyone who doesn't is a filthy peasant.
Huh, never thought that OP. I'll try it next time I play an FPS.
Why would you use the '7' key as jump. You have to forfeit one of your movement fingers to jump when you could typically use your thumb to press the spacebar. Even if you switch jumping to the 'Enter' key, it makes it uncomfortable for larger hands to use.
Also, full sized keyboards have a number pad on them, aka pretty much every keyboard you'll use outside of smaller laptops. Why would you buy a keypad when you could move your keyboard over a foot.
I'm too used to WASD and I don't want to bother with rebinding keys for every fps I play. :geno:
This looks ridiculously hard to use.
except you use your left hand to play games and its gonna be awkward
also 7 for jump is stupid.
Actual amazing alternative to WSAD: ESDF. More keys around the 4 for more bindable actions :>. Used in the old old days as the default by a few games. :)

My ring finger rests on 4 and I quickly jump to 7 and back to 4 no problem
But now that you mentioned it, it seems like that it wouldn't work. But I can can jump and move left just fine
I'm sure I could get used to using this, but I really don't see any good reasons to switch.
It's just another set of keys I'd have to train myself to use when I can just use the WASD layout now.
Eh, the only problem is that you would have to use a left handed mouse if you are right handed.

Or you could use your left hand on the keyboard and move the keyboard

I won't accidentally hit the Windows Key
That never actually happens, believe it or not.
It sounds like a good idea, actually. I'll try it sometime.
That never actually happens, believe it or not.
It's very rare but it has happened to me
God you guys are making me feel so dumb lol
used to use a variation of this when I played C&C Renegade, no difference between it and WASD at all
That never actually happens, believe it or not.
I've never done it, but I hear people bitch about it all the time.
It's not that hard to avoid it.
I use the arrow keys and use numpad 0 for sprint. Numpad 1/2/delete can be a lot of different things, usually numpad delete is toggle crouch.
If I try to use the keypad it feels like I'm trying to get all of my fingers as close as I can to each other, mostly my pinky and thumb. I can see why it would be okay with your pointer, middle, and ring finger, but again, my pinky and thumb feel extremely uncomfortable if I try to use them.
This seems like it would work great if I were left-handed, but since I'm a righty, using the numpad wouldn't allow me to use my thumb and pinkie in any useful manner.
Burn the heretic!
This is actually pretty cool, too bad I'm too lazy to actually rebind everything/get used to using the keypad/own a separate USB keypad.
If I had my games setup with those bindings, I'd keep throwing grenades whenever I'd have wanted to go forward and vice versa. That setup also makes it rather difficult to move while crouched/prone because your middle finger gets in the way.
not really a point to do this imo
There are not nearly enough keys near the numpad for FPS games.
But WASD feels so natural.

Like, my fingers space out to it and everything.
The only alternative in terms of standard keyboard layout/keyshapes to wasd is okl;
Everything else has the upper key offcenter. I guess you'd like OKL; if you're using a left-handed mouse for whatever reason.
Why on earth would you ever put jump over a directional button so you can't strafejump that direction?
ESDF forever. Moving over one key opens up so many more.
I tried this on WoW, kept launching skills instead of moving.
