• OpenAL - How to get better audio

After messing around, I discovered that Minecraft appears to use a special software implementation of OpenAL. Owners of Sound Blasters (and probably nForce) have access to hardware acceleration of OpenAL, but it is not used by Minecraft's library. I replaced the OpenAL32.dll file provided by Minecraft with the standard implementation from my X-Fi driver, and the result was much better audio through headphones. The sounds were no longer inside my head, and I was able to tell the difference between all directions. I do not recommend owners of sound cards without OpenAL support to try this.
Sound Blaster audigy 2 here, Will try if it works.
Tried this with X-Fi XtremeGamer and noticed a difference but for some reason it gives me a headache. :v: Instructions in case anyone needs: Go to C:\Windows\System32. Find OpenAL32.dll and copy it. Go to %AppData%\.minecraft\bin\natives and rename your current OpenAL32.dll and then paste the new OpenAL32.dll.
So how does this exactly compare to the original sound dll? What's the difference [editline]9th April 2011[/editline] Ooooh, better surround sound? Or is it just me? [editline]9th April 2011[/editline] woah holy fuck that is awesome
Helped alot! I've done it, then gone try it, I was able to recognize where the liquid noise was coming from, hit through the walls, found a HUGE lava pool with diamonds on the roof, it was bridge making, diamond extracting time!
Thanks, it will help me in some occasions.
why hasnt notch added surround from the beginning?
if you don't have openal32.dll in windows/system 32 go here http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/Forms/AllItems.aspx and download the windows installer
Thank you!
cool
This is fantastic.
No difference on asus xonar, but I can use dolby headphone
why hasnt notch added surround from the beginning?
Possibly because not every sound driver (from my understanding) has the .dll, and he doesn't want to distribute it as warez or something along those lines.
For some reason I can tell directions in Minecraft videos but not in game. Shame I don't have a dedicated sound card or anything like that.
Where's OpenAL64.dll?
Where's OpenAL64.dll?
http://www.mediafire.com/?lmgq1vqo2w0
http://www.mediafire.com/?lmgq1vqo2w0
First result on google, a mediafire link with no added explanation. I tend not to just grab dll's from random mediafire results which come up on google, call me crazy. I was looking more for something along the lines of a file path in my windows folder or an official creative labs download.
I hope that it works with my on-board sound chip :v:.
I don't know why, but somehow I got surround without doing this. (creative x-fi) going to try out this little trick here when I get the chance though, would be cool if it made the sound even better! :)
My surround sound works in Minecraft regardless...
My surround sound works in Minecraft regardless...
So does mine. If you're on 64 bit, maybe it's because the 64 bit OpenAL dll packaged with minecraft supports it but the 32 bit one doesn't?
So, I grab the OpenAL32.dll from System32, where is the minecraft one?
Holy shiiiiiiit, this is cool.
Okay, I did it, and I was actually surprised. At first I could hear things around me directionally already, but after doing what the OP did, its actually MUCH more distinctive with more clarity and I can get a more accurate direction instead of a general left right forward backward sound.
So, I grab the OpenAL32.dll from System32, where is the minecraft one?
AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin\natives
Very nice! Thanks for the directional sound, I always hated hearing zombies moaning from all around me, even when there was only one of them.
My surround sound works in Minecraft regardless...
Multi-speaker surround works fine with the supplied library, but there won't be any HRTF in stereo mode.
I don't have the OpenAl file, what do I do then?
Download it. http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/oalinst.zip
I don't have the OpenAl file, what do I do then?
I think you'll have to install it yourself. http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/Forms/AllItems.aspx Ninja'd :ninja:
