Megaman, once a contender with Mario and Sonic, has been around for more than 20 years, and he's had some good, and bad games. Overall, however, he's had a decent track record and he's one of my favorites, if my name is any indication, but let me tell you good FPers about some of the games. This is just a cursory glance, but it should tell a bit about the games:
Megaman 1-6 (NES): The classic Megaman games, all on the Nintendo Entertainment System. 1-3 are considered the best Megaman games to date, if not some of the best platformers of all time, and each involves a similar goal: take down 8 robots that been creating to wreak havoc, and then take down their master, Dr. Wily. 4-6 are still good, but not the same classics 1-3 were.
Megaman 7-9 (SNES, PS1/Saturn, and WiiWare/PSN/XBLA Respectively): These were made very far apart compared to the original six and are viewed with varying degrees of fondness. 7, in my opinion, is quite good, as well as 8, while 9 seems a tad mediocre, but that's just me.
Megaman and Bass (SNES, PS1, GBA): A spin-off game of the same vein that was for a long time considered to be "Megaman 9", but this was disproved after the official 9th was made.
These games are what's known as the "Classic Series", and the Megaman used in them in the first one on the left from the middle, and each follows the same formula as 1-3. Just take down the 8 Robot Masters and then Dr. Wily (or in some cases a different evil scientist)
I'll just cover the next 2 MAJOR series', and if you are curious of the others, then you may look them up, as they are more obscure. I will provide names and pages.
Megaman X1-X8 (SNES[X1-X3], PS1[X4-X6], PS2[X7+X8]): These carry the same "8 boss" formula as the Classic Series, but with a more serious, metallic look and feel. Each boss is no longer based on simple concepts (ice, bomb, fire, etc.), but more complex words and animals (Overdrive Ostrich, Storm Eagle, etc.).
This is what is known as the X series.
Megaman Battle Network 1-6 (GBA, NGC[NT]): These are more of a freeform strategy game, which require you to choose weapons called "Battle Chips" each time you have a turn to do so. This time Megaman is in cyberspace, and he fights viruses. In place of Robot Masters, there are Navis (Navigation assistants, not Avatar Navi) that you fight, and most are remakes of classic robots from the Classic Series (FireMan.EXE, IceMan.EXE, etc.) For the Gamecube, their was a game called Network Transmission which is in this series, but returns to the game's platforming roots.
This is what's known as the Battle Network Series.
Again, this is just a cursory glance, and for more detailed information on these, and more obscure Megaman titles, I guide you to the Megaman Knowledge Base:

Spin-off Series to search for:
Megaman StarForce 1-3
Megaman Legends 1/2
Megaman Zero 1-4
Does anyone on FP know of or enjoy Megaman games? If so, post your favorites and discuss.
Loved the NES ones, I still play them time to time on my PSP with the NES emulator when I'm around town.

Yup, I particularly like Megaman 6, out of that group at least.
Megaman is great. Megaman 9 is great. Too many spikes. MM10 is lookin' good too
I think the only Megaman I ever had was Megaman X4 or something.
Had some longhaired dude called Zero I think.
It was an X series game. Zero has glass tits by the way.

Megaman X is the best of the series. You can climb walls, dash and wear amour
2 & 3 were my most played for NES, played it all through my childhood and only just completed it about 2 weeks ago.
I was so glad when they released 9 as a 8-bit retro style with similar music too. Instead of making it with 3d models. That's the one thing I don't like the look about on the new sonic, for me anyway.
I own Megaman Legends, Legends 2, Battle Networks 3, 5, 6, and Star Force 1. I used to own Megaman and Bass, but it was stolen from me.
I finished Megaman Legends, but never got to finish 2 due to my PS1 breaking. All the Battle Networks I own I finished, and I somehow got the 100% completion in Star Force 1.
The Megaman games were the best.
Megaman is one of my favourite game series of all time.
Can't wait for MM10.
Og > x.
Megaman Legends was my favorite game on the PS1.

Obligatory
Megaman 2 was the best game ever.
Elecman, Fireman, and Iceman from MegaMan were the best. Throw in the MegaBuster (in MM1/2/3, you could not charge, so it was just the Buster, in MM4, it was called the MegaBuster, as you could now charge it. MM9 does NOT have that feature) and BAM! Epic MM game!
I like MM9 and what they're doing with MM10. But I wish they did the pixels in a high resolution. I know it wouldn't be legit 8-bit but it would look a hell of a lot better and would play the same.
I really did love the first Megaman Battle Network game, the first one being simply awesome (i'd play it again but someone stole it :( )
I really want a battle network MMO, seeing as the whole setup for the games would suit one perfectly, but thats not ever going to happen on the DS, and the few pc based fan attempts I've seen appear to have fallen apart...sigh

Fuck that, MMX9 :haw:
I have never swore so much in any game before.

Like megaman 2
As thread starter, I must post my own personal collection:
Games I own (Megaman):
MegaMan 8
Megaman 9
Megaman X4
Megaman X5
Megaman Legends 1
Megaman Legends 2
Megaman Battle Network 1
Megaman Battle Network 2
Megaman Battle Network 3: White
Megaman Battle Network 4.5 (Imported from Japan, I speak Japanese pretty well, so I can play it)
Megaman Battle Network 5: Team Colonel
Megaman Battle Network 5: Team Protoman
Megaman Battle Network 6: Falztar
Megaman Battle Network 6: Gregar
Games I have owned at one point (and still enjoy on a regular basis, thanks to emulators, but they were stolen, and I still technically own them, so it is legal to some degree):
Megaman and Bass
Megaman Battle Network 3: Blue
Megaman Battle Network 4: Blue Moon
Megaman Battle Network 4: Red Sun
Megaman Battle Network 5: Double Team DS
You missed Megaman ZX and Megaman ZX Advent, which were both awesome. They're basically Megaman Zero style of games, except in a Metroid-like level structure.
Protoman is epic. For some reason he stands out as a bad ass to me

I actually owned both of those, ironically enough. I tried to edit my post, but the page wouldn't load.
So add these to that list:
Megaman ZX
Megaman ZX Advent
Megaman Zero
Megaman Zero 2
Megaman Zero 3
Megaman Zero 4
Lets see...
Megaman X 1-8, Megaman Zero 1-3, MMBN 1-6 (no 4.5, but including NT), Legends 1 & 2, MegaMan 8 & 9, and MegaMan and Bass. I haven't kept up with the DS titles and slowly lost interest in the X series after X6. Using an emulator to play MMZ4 took out the fun, leading me to cheat to simply find out the end of the story.
Mega Man Legends 2 was the greatest game of them all, IMO. Deep story, perfect gameplay, never got dull or repetitive. That low-polygon model of Megaman is how I identify the series. Take away the pointy features and his 2D face and that feeling is gone. A Legends 3 wouldn't feel right anymore.
I agree.
The battle network series is something I try my damndest to avoid. Classic Series and X are about as far as I go with it, but the second you turn a badass robot butler into some faggot kids pet I'm out.
That and the redesigns for him and roll are fucking retarded
Eh. I don't "detest" Battle Network or Starforce, but I don't like them.
If the collection games count...:
Megaman 1-8
Megaman: Power Battles
Megaman: The Power Fighters
Megaman & Bass
Megaman Battle & Chase
Megaman X1-6
Megaman Xtreme 2
Megaman Zero 1, 3, 4
Megaman ZX, ZXA
I'm a mainfag, so what? Still upset that Megaman 10 seems more like a cash-in, but not much I can do about it. Beaten MM7, all the X games, all the Zero games, and both ZX games.
Also, I don't know the link for it, but there's a finished 8-bit fan remake of Rockman 7 (the japanese version of Megaman) floating around, and an alternate 8-bit Rockman 8 being made by a different group.
I didn't really like original Megaman series but i LOVE Megaman Zero series.
I completed Megaman Zero 1-4 like 3 times each, love the game (don't use Blaster, EVER, Z-Saber pwns everything.)

In the end Zero *Zeros real death spoilers* dies.
Protoman is epic. For some reason he stands out as a bad ass to me
I've found that he talks more than he attacks. The badass, to me, is Bass.
In Legends 2, there's one point where, to obtain a weapon artifact or something like that, you have to undergo a 100-question test on popular culture. Miss one and you have to restart. I can't remember how many times I saw the name "Madonna" appear in that test, but I do remember completing it by muscle memory alone. And the test is randomized. I came out of that expecting a wave motion gun, I got a piece of a sword. It felt like an achievement.
