Simple thread, just interested to see what game devs snuck in as references or, well as the title says, things you missed in general when you were younger and recently found out about.
Example would be in Majora's Mask. I used to play Ocarina of Time alot when I was rather young, I was always scared of ReDeads and anything water related in games, so I managed to play up to the fire temple before dropping the game. I would mess around and talk to people and be completely useless to links quest. At one point I talked to a young goron after completing the fire temple and he mentioned "My name is [the name you chose for the file]! My dad named me after a great hero that saved us!" This statement made me happy and I got it as a kid.
Time passes and Majora's Mask comes around. Once again got to the water temple before giving up and running around, I started a side quest and whatnot and managed to catch Anju, the inkeeper at the right time. "Do you have a reservation?" she'd ask the player and if you said yes she'd... find you're name in the book no matter what you named yourself. The game never explains what is going on but if you wait around long enough a Goron shows up and you find out you took his key. He then goes and sleeps outside as he doesn't mind. I always thought it was funny and as I was playing earlier I realized it's the little goron from OoT all grown up and it was a reference to OoT in disguise.
Stuff like this always interests me to see how developers sneak things in so, feel free to share things you've learned over the years about your favorite games :v:
I didn't know what Tardis was when I first saw it in Fallout.
I didn't get some of the references in Time Splitters Future Perfect, like "THEY'RE COMING OUT OF THE GOD DAMN WALLS!".
None of my friends got the Aliens references in Call of duty 4.
Aww I feel sad for the goron

Oh yeah the "I like to keep this for close encounters"
Just about everything anyone said about the cavefish in Full Throttle when I was 5.
Back then I thought they were biker clowns with oil squirting twinkies instead of water shooting flowers.
watch a let's play 15 years later and O_o.

"Stay frosty"
"Check those corners"
"We are leaving!"
All in the same level.

"On your feet soldier, WE ARE LEAVING"
I think that was one too.
After you watch a few classic movies and tv shows, your mind will be blown.
Blow it out your ass.
