I was always wondering, why Valve removes something from the beta.
Half Life 2:
HL2 beta was incredible looking, but they removed lots of stuff.
Like Hydra for example:

It looked awesome and really interesting to play againts with. I know that Valve said something about not working right, but people got it fixed after they got hands on the beta.
*My mistake about the soundtrack. I thought it was a beta soundtrack. Sorry.*
If you don't know, how HL2 beta looked like, go and download a mod Missing Information or watch this video:

Left 4 Dead:
I was amazed, how L4D looked like in beta stages. It looked very dark and horrific. Instead, they made it an action game.
Here's an 2 examples of L4D1 beta:

also, L4D2 beta was also interesting. When you smashed a zombie with melee weapon, it threw him away like a ball. And a minor change is the beta alarm, that sounded better than in original.
Both of these things can be seen in this video:

I can say the skins are better now in L4D2, but L4D1 skins weren't that bad.
I don't know about Team Fortress 2 beta and other valve games, but these 3 games were the ones that could be better, if beta stuff was also in the original.
I'm not saying Valve games are bad, they are extremely fun and awesome looking, but if they added/kept some stuff from the beta, it would be even more awesome.
Do you agree? Or do you think they did the right thing?
I completely disagree, beta is just an earlier version of the game. You like it because it feels like an alternate version or what could have been. If you like it more, you're just being stupid.
[editline]12:30PM[/editline]
If you really prefer the beta alarm, that's just the dumbest thing. The zombies being thrown when killed melee is clearly a bug too, look how awkward and jumpy it is while creating the ragdoll.
[editline]12:31PM[/editline]
That early L4D looks ugly and hard to see in.
[editline]12:31PM[/editline]
It also looks like it would feel more like HL2, in a bad way.
Almost all of the HL2 stuff in that first video was a tech demo, it was hideously unoptimized and never intended to be used in-game, hence why it wasn't.
I recommend you buy "Raising the Bar", it'll give you some insight into why they made the cuts they did.
You left out Portal beta with the awesome Portals and darker feel to the enrichment center.
darker feel to the enrichment center.
The darker feel looked terrible, the lighting was way off. It seriously looks like there are leaks in the maps :raise:
I dont know man darker enrichment center looks pretty awesome to me.
Path of Borealis is not from the HL2 beta, its a fan-made remix of Triage at Dawn. The soundtrack for the beta is exactly the same but it only has like 10 songs.

Oh god, the Left 4 Dead beta is ugly

Only thing I liked about the beta is the dark look of it, but they kind of kept that for the retail game anyways. The L4D beta had horribly low poly survivors, tons of low res textures, looked bad all around, and used a shit ton of CSS stuff.
You said people got the hydra fixed. However, the only videos of hydras I can find are extremely laggy, buggy things.
Also, I'm amazed. For the first time, I'm not the only one who absolutely hated the dark grittiness and low res textured environment in the earlier stages of Left 4 Dead.
I mean honestly, that was terrible. Even the beta CI had gritty detailing slammed all over their textures.
It was like Fakefactory for L4D, turn up the Sharpness and Noise filters.
Also you forgot to mention that not only is it scripted and all but the majority you are watching a high res video be compressed by a camera and then compressed again when uploaded.
Well I might be wrong but I thinks is because the betas have unreleased things that make them desirable.
I always liked the beta in many games but hl2 is the nr.1 i mean look how many stuff was leaked.
I love the sound of the M16 in the L4D beta. Plus the SCAR was automatic in the L4D2 beta D:
The L4D beta was fucking better to the L4D we actually have. More of survival horror atmosphere. I literally hate the one we currently have.
For the HL2 beta, the only things I regret would have been the missing weapons and enemies, as said before, those levels were more of a showcase.
According to Raising the Bar, Hydra was dropped because while it looked cool, it wasn't actually fun to fight.
I hate the No Mercy beta skybox.
Completly throws the "Zombie Apocalipse" feeling away.
It's not necessarily better, it's just that it was changed and you already played what it was changed to, therefore you're more interested in the beta than what you already played.
2 Things I liked more about left4dead1: sounds and darkness, would have been rich in my opinion.
According to Raising the Bar, Hydra was dropped because while it looked cool, it wasn't actually fun to fight.
This is true. I remember it in Obsidian Conflict and how it would kill you from halfway across the map.
The only thing I did like from any of those is that HL2 Beta was a lot more about using environmental stuff to kill your enemies. Also, he threw down his shotgun before he picked up the rocket launcher in the beta video. I would have liked limited inventory space in the actual HL2 because I'm sick of cycling halfway through my inventory before I get to what I want.
Plus the SCAR was automatic in the L4D2 beta D:
I'm glad it wasn't in the final game.

Fast switch + number keys + "good" memory = that isn't a problem
Early L4D1 looks horrible, almost like goldsrc.

Like The Hydra This is a fucking type of monster, not some famous one of a kind celebrity named Hydra. for example:

It looked awesome and really interesting to play againts with. I know that Valve said something about not working right, but people got it fixed after they got hands on the beta.
It wasn't broken, it's no fun to fight against.
HL2 beta also had some nice soundtrack:

(Yes, it's also featured in original HL2, but only for 10 seconds or so)
What the fuck has a fan-made remix of Triage At Dawn got to do with the Half-Life 2 leak.
^
OP path of borealis is a fucking remix and not from the beta
IF YOU DIDN'T REALIZE THIS, ALL OF THE SONS FROM THE ALPHA SOUNDTRACK ARE FAKE.
The video you posted with the hydra shows how broken it was. The good one that they showed at E3 was all scripted and that's why it looked awesome. You can't seriously think that the video you posted makes it look awesome, can you? It barely even works from the looks of things. Although Valve did say in RTB that they may try to rework the concept behind the hydra in the future and give it better AI to combat the problems that forced them to cut it. So that means that there's a slim chance that it will end up in a future Half Life title. Personally I like to think that some of the cut monsters still exist within canon. What’s to say that there wasn’t a hydra somewhere under City 17 or cremators some where that Gordon never visited? I mean, they showed Crab and Mortar synths towards the end but we never saw those again. That just shows that there is a lot in the Half Life universe that we haven’t seen yet.
Edit: Also the cremator head in Eli's lab, while it could just be a pure easter egg with no substance to it, may prove that cremators are still out there somewhere.
In my opinion the only thing that is good in Half-Life 2 "beta" is the storyline. I liked it more than the original one.
portal had dof on the portal gun, not sure why they took that out
beta tf2 looked MUCH better also
l4d2 beta alarm sounded like shit
