When contacted in regards to the team, Doug Lombardi, vice president of marketing at Valve, shared the following with us. "I can confirm that the Tag dev team are employed at Valve. But that's about all I can say right now." The possibility of an acquisition arose over the weekend, as Shack community member Masem was discussing Portal 2 details from the latest issue of Game Informer. The article made reference to, in Masem's words, "using special paint that gives unique physical properties to surfaces (eg rocket jumping, speed bursts, etc)". On the DigiPen site, Tag: The Power of Paint is described as such: "Tag delivers an innovative approach to multiple genres-platformer, puzzle, and first-person shooter-by allowing the player to manipulate the physical attributes of the game's environment using different colors of paint." Hiring a team from the educational institution for their gameplay concepts isn't outside of the realm of possibility for Valve Software. In fact, it was the exact same thing that happened to the developers of Narbacular Drop, the DigiPen game created by Kim Swift and her team, which would eventually become what we now know as Portal. Prior to Valve's direct confirmation, Masem did some investigating of his own and found "two of the four main students on the project and they claim Valve employment." Excellent work, Masem! Portal 2 was officially announced last week and today confirmed for fall release on PC, Xbox 360, and (for the first time in Valve's history) Mac.
:siren: HOYL FUCK ERROR IN MY THREAD TITLE :siren: There is no paint gun in Portal 2, I meant the paint.
Oh shit, nice find.
Sweeeeet.
Whats this a paint gun? Hmm, seems interesting.
Sweet, erm, What's with the picture? Can't wait.
I fucking knew it! I knew those guys were relevant when i heard of the property changing slime!
;20635170']Sweet, erm, What's with the picture? Can't wait.
It's from the game they got the paint idea from.
Portal 2 now has paint gun? :aaa:
There's no paint gun, there's just paint. You can manipulate the paint through portals, and the paint functions like the paint in Tag, but your only "weapon" is still the portal gun.
I'm curious to see how they coded the paint.
Isn't the paint just a decal? Gameplay:
Yes but the effects on gameplay it creates. As a decal it would be easy to do, however from the description I get the impression that in Portal it's somehow free flowing.
Although you don't use the paint gun in portal, it's just the paint.
Played this a while ago, it's a pretty decent puzzle game (especially as it is free).
There are gonna be paint "vents" apparently

Looks like a fun game, downloading now.
I played this game way back when it first came out, and thought it would work well with Portal.
Game doesnt work for me, its all flickering and screwed up. [img_thumb]http://www.zilefile.com/files/10484_6cvfi/Tag%202010-03-08%2017-51-21-08.jpg[/img_thumb]
Glad to see that Portal will have a new style of gameplay, as well, not just new story and levels.
I hope they pull this off well, I don't want it getting too complicated.
Awesome, I knew it had to be Valve hiring these guys. Because it's a pretty original idea, don't think stealing is a Valve tactic.
Was a really fun game. I was thinking Valve stole the idea, but then I saw the team is now working there, so.. [editline]06:57AM[/editline]
Isn't the paint just a decal? Valve is clever. Hiring indie devs.
This is a really fun game, but it's a shame that all the DigiPen projects are really short.
some of these DigiPen games look pretty interesting. i wouldnt be surprised if VALVe works with them more in the future
OH god I remember this game, for some reason I find it amazing that I remember this game
This is a really fun game, but it's a shame that all the DigiPen projects are really short.
They couldn't really be anything else, though. Remember, these games are all made by college students as a senior project. They've got a tight deadline and not a whole lot of experience or resources to work with.
Ha, I tried this a while ago, commented to a friend how it was like Narbacular Drop all over again. Looks to be good, folks. (Also, I remember a magazine said it was like portal with paint)
