Ok, I seem to be stuck in perpetual debate with a console gamer (who can't stop talking about MW2) who (howls of surprise) loves consoles. He can't stand playing on the PC, and obviously finds it difficult to stop talking about how much he pwnz n00bz on his PS3.
I don't get it. How do you actually aim well on the console? He says it's absolutely no problem, but i do remember playing quite a bit on a console at a friend's house (I have no console of my own) and I found it very hard to aim without any kind of assistance, and often needed to strafe in order to line up a shot. Contrariwise, twitch aiming is second nature on the PC, it's pretty easy for me to land a solid blow with say a Magnum (in HL2DM) on someone running at full speed right past me, for instance.
So, tell me this... how do they do it? And perhaps the more pertinent question is, if two gamers of roughly the same skill were pitted head to head, one who used a mouse, the other a controller, how would they fare against each other?
Jgcx
Ps. I'm not specifically a console hater, I just think they're a bit overrated.
We usually use the stick to aim.
Well the trick is to shoot after you've lined the enemy in your crosshair/ironsight.
Aim assist helps.

The title was just supposed to make you think.
I'm afraid your attempts at cynicism have failed you. If you actually read the post, i never said you couldn't aim/kill them, I meant that it just seemed very awkward.
Everyone has their own preferences.
/thread.
It just takes some getting used to. I'm pretty sure that the mouse is better in every way though.
It's like riding a bike, you do it long enough and you'll get good. I used to always prefer pc but I've been playing a lot of games on my 360 and feel more confident with that for the time being.
It's easier on consoles, aim assist helps you a lot. (it can fuck it up too though)
It's much easier to quickscope etc on consoles.
It's piss easy on consoles compared to on PC.
Having not played on a console for a few years I went to a friend's house and played MW2, I was top of every match and my friends were gawping at my leet skills. Really I was just so used to having to aim properly on PC that the slow reactions of the average Xboxer were shit in comparison.

That's a relative observation. Not an absolute one, which is what the OP is after I believe.
The stick actually works pretty well to aim.
There are some games that do support a keyboard and mouse, though very few. I remember that Half-Life for the PS2 did.
Also online games can be far more entertaining on consoles as it is harder for people to just line up a shot easily like with the mouse extending the game-time and generally just making it more fun.
Being able to get pin-point accuracy on PC all the time with no hinderance is actually quite boring when what it really means is you, as a player, have far less time to react to seeing an enemy before you're dead.
But yeah, it's preferences. I like playing Halo on Xbox but I don't think it would work so well on PC cause it's quite headshot centric and on PC it'd be stupidly easy to get the headshots while the controller on xbox makes it harder.
To answer your question the one using the mouse would win. That, however, is not saying that a mouse is more fun to play with simply that it is more accurate.
I can't be bothered setting up a complex argument but the point is total accuracy =/= fun.
I'm used to sticks, so I don't have any problems aiming.
Using the sticks to aim is of course going to be hard for a while if you play on the PC most of the time.
Personally, I enjoy my Xbox controller better.
[sp]because I suck with the mouse[/sp]
Using the sticks because it's just as accurate as M+KB

Perhaps not, but what definitely isn't fun is frustrating, cumbersome controls which I'm surprised more gamers do not complain about.
Consoles are made for the mentally handicapped and the physically deformed
naturally the controllers reflect this so I believe the best way to improve your aim is to handle the controller in a similar way to how someone with motor neuron disease would. You won't get the hang of it right away but keep practising and remember to spasm occasionally and soon you'll be playing as well as your online peers.

Well the controls obviously are not frustrating to them. I can aim all good on consoles, it's not like I find aiming fun or frustrating.
I kinda suck with the mouse, that's why I bought it for PS3.
And because my comp suck ass too.
(I have no console of my own)
Well there you go. If you don't use a control system of course it will be awkward. I've been using a controller since I was 5 and aiming is piss easy, so much so that auto aim actually makes aiming harder for me. When I play on the PC, which I don't do often, I find it much harder.
Though playing on the PC has made my controller aiming better by increasing my reaction time.

i could write half a university master project on this throwing examples at you.
but to put it simply. both controls have strong and weak points and if these gamers were clever enough, they would both be applying tactics that uses their controls to their gain.
I.E. the PC gamer speeds around because he's got a better chance to hit if they meet head on and start circulating each other.
the Console gamer may be taking more cover, being more hesitant about running into open spaces and may also camp to his advantage.
my guess but i can assure you' they'll be handling it quite differently to get equal results.
my oppinion is, and always will be. sandbox games, driving, platformers and 3rd person action games are native to the console controls.
shooters, RTS, TBS and traditional RPG all belong on the pc for best experience. and this is how i ride.
Its not very difficult. I can play on consoles and PC pretty well.
With ease. I wish these kind of threads were bannable.
The truth is that they never aim as well as a good player on the PC.
This is one reason console gaming can never co-exist with PC gaming competetively. In an FPS like quake, console players would have the shit ripped out of them.
Don't get me wrong though, a gamepad is better for driving games easily.

You and me both man, I'm sick and tired of these assholes and their PC elitism.

This. M+K for precision, gamepad for vehicles.

You're on a PC game forum, what the fuck do you expect?
This. M+K for precision, gamepad for vehicles.
My rules are similar to this. M+K for shooters, and controller for driving, fighting, adventure, and movement based games. (Such as Assassin's Creed)
I use my Wii Remote to aim.
