• Why did Valve use a low quality FMV for the ending of Portal 2? *No spoilers*

The fuck is this? That was so anti-climatic, I go from crisp clear max settings 1920x1200 with 8x MSAA to like terrible and compressed fmv (since when does Valve do this?!). Can we just confirm this game was made for consoles? The menus have fmv's scenery now (no more realtime like in HL2 :ohdear:), the menus still use the L4D menus made for controls without pointing devices, that glitchy save message, and now this? *sigh* Other than all of that the game was great but too short to be full price imo. And I bet you the PS3 version's fmv is higher quality, that's usually what happens with PS3 versions.
Get Out
Mine looked fine I don't know what you're talking about.
I have the ps3 version as well as the PC version and both of the endings looked fine to me. I didn't notice any difference.
If you're serious; get the fuck out. If you're not; I rated you funny. Made me laugh.
Not worth the $50? :get the fuck outta here:
i agree the rendered ending was bad i agree it's not worth 50 bucks but dude the new menu is good, better than the original hl2 stuff, it's neat, not ugly like the default hl2's. the coop is good why are you complaining. and the fact that it has a new menu/interface and cool rendered stuff on the background doesn't mean it WAS MADE for consoles. they primarily designed it for PC. you know what go hug that huge ball that stores white stuff and see if some comes out, because i take it that's what you really bought the game for
The ending was brilliant but there's no reason why it shouldn't have been realtime and I was disappointed with that. Still, brilliant.
i bet you play with p-body
The menu's have FMV because they load much faster than loading an actual map for the menu's background.
fuck dog-gy go break someones else automerge [editline]20th April 2011[/editline] FUCK
They're not FMVs for godsakes they're .biks, most games use them now-a-days.
yeah the fmv really took me by surprise, Valve has always used real time for everything. HL2: EP3 ending in crappy fmv's here we come :eng99:
They're not FMVs for godsakes they're .biks, most games use them now-a-days.
FMV stands for Full Motion Video. They are FMVs, bik is just the file type,
Which part of the ending are we talking about? [sp]the wheatfield, the singing turrets, or the moon?[/sp]

All because consoles have 2004 hardware that could not render the ending with good fps for shit.
Which part of the ending are we talking about? [sp]the wheatfield, the singing turrets, or the moon?[/sp]
Curious, what resolution are you playing at? At 1920x1200 it is obvious when the fmv starts due to the very huge difference in picture quality. To answer your question: [sp]When GLaDOS lets you leave, and you go in the elevator, it becomes an fmv[/sp]
I also noticed that it changed from real time into a video and the quality changed a bit, but it's nothing significant.
Wow.
fuck dog-gy go break someones else automerge [editline]20th April 2011[/editline] FUCK
:v also p-body is THE BOMB
"hurr durr portal 2 not worth $50 bcuz it uses a pre-rendered cutscene like a lot of other games do"
Never said that. I even said the game was great. But that part was a real quality slip on Valve's part.
And the ending film where the [sp]turrets play you a song[/sp] is an FMV simply because it's easier to get everything synced properly if it's pre-rendered. A bit annoying though as it's designed for 16:9 monitors and I have a 16:10, so it's noticeable when it changes from Source Engine to FMV.
Never said that.
What made you think that I was quoting you? And basically, it's pretty much what you're saying. Besides, Valve is all about lower-end computers, and does it really matter if you're super-high graphics are lowered for 2 minutes?
Whatever, still pre-rendered as opposed to beautiful, crisp, real-time. All because consoles have 2004 hardware that could not render the ending with good fps for shit.
Portal 2 can run on computers from 2004.
You should be thankful it was only 50 dollars and not the usual 60 that most games are today. Valve delivered everything they promised they said they would in Portal 2 in more. This massive butthurt shitstorm that portal 2 really does not deserve confuses me to no end. And the SP was short? It took me 11 hours to beat portal 2. I don't even suck at it or anything, I don't know how someone can beat the whole game in four hours unless they are trying for a lazy speedrun. There is tons of shit to look at and explore in every room, I had to of spend 24 minutes in each of the cave johnson test chambers just marveling at the amazing constructions and derelict lifts.

At least not every not gameplay scene was an fmv, or else it'd be like Batman AA: Awesome beautiful gameplay and then out of nowhere a really cools scene in Youtube quality :sigh:
Don't bother, most people here couldn't possibly recognize a flaw with a Valve game. But yes, using FMV was stupid and certainly wasn't true to Valve's style.

it's probably because it involved a lot of models and AFAIK Source does not support geometric impostors yet
