This video will explain it better than I can but I will still try.
Starmade is pretty much Minecraft in space; you build ships from blocks and have to account for weapon systems, engines, shield generators, and even cameras so you can see where you're going.
There is a fully fledged "factions" feature, which is pretty much Guilds if you've ever played an MMORPG.
AI Pirates, Mining Asteroids for ore, manufacturing stuff from planets, and even killing other players can all be done to earn you credits (the ingame currency)
It is very fun. And you can play for free while the game is still in alpha or buy it for 3 dollars.
Daily updates from the very friendly and active developer, Schema.

Well, I was more referring to the body proportions than anything else.
Also that we just get dumped in space :)
Helpful tip to anyone starting out, ignoring the tutorial is a bad idea.

I landed on a planet and my ship isn't powerful enough to get off. The planet seems to be hurtling through space toward the area that I came from.
I'm too scared to fall off of the side of the disk-planet (gravity is weird and keeps you falling for a while before realizing that you aren't near the object) and risk falling forever.

I have no more thrusters and I don't think you can make them. I'll fall off I guess. Seeing something huge and odd in space like that weirds me out a lot (which is why I shouldn't be playing a space game)

You can make thrusters by manufacturing. Automated process. For you minecrafters its sort of like tekkits system of automation, a little bit less advanced though.
I'd suggest joining a server, because you can get a lot more help there.

Also sorry for not being clear enough. You can buy them or make them by building a factor in a station that you can either find or build yourself. Thats about it. Its more realistic than "crafting them."

My friend can't seem to connect to my server using hamachi. I have the dedicated server running and hamachi and he is trying to connect using my hamachi IP and Port but it doesn't seem to work. Anyone tried that?

Don't use hamachi. It usually only works with some games. Just port forward.
