My friend recently bought Battlefield 2 Deluxe Edition and since that he has been trying to play with me. He needed to update to patch 1.5, which meant he needed to go up to 1.41 first. Sadly, he gets an unusual error message when he runs the file.

You guys got any idea why this is happening, bear in mind that he is using the Deluxe Edition.

Have you tried to re-download it from another link?
I don't think you need to update in order to play. Just leave it at is it. steam will update necessarily.
If anything, you have the patching issues

Also try checking the website or mailing the customer care.

probably not the steam version. isnt there a official bf2 forum maybe you can solve the problem there

It's the first thing you see when you scroll down the picture. A big, "HALO REACH" right there in your face.
