As a guy myself, I know a lot of girl friends who play video games, and I've come across a number of girls playing L4D2, TF2, and other Steam games.
Statistics taken through different organizations seem to suggest that female gamers are a rising demographic too. 3 years ago the ESA claimed the gender ratio was 3:2 for male:female, with women approaching 50% (I believe the current percentage is 46%). It's not very uncommon to find girls playing in game clans, on servers, or part of video game communities too: although there isn't really an equal percentage between guys and girls right yet.
Based on your own research and experience, do you think more women are playing video games? Do you think more and more women will continue to play video games, or is the current movement just a fad?
I've not particularly noticed
Maybe, though I hate it when they go all ''im a girl oooh respect me n listen to me cause im a girl gamerrr oooh if u let me kill u ill give u nudiessss''

To be fair though, some of the time that is true, although there are a lot of bad occasions where guys stereotype and read too much into girls talking about themselves.
I showed my 14-year-old little sister HL2DM last night and she fucking loved it.
My sister loves GTA and BC2. :v:
I've met one girl in my entire life who actually plays games seriously. Every other "gamer girl" I've ever met is basically
''im a girl oooh respect me n listen to me cause im a girl gamerrr oooh if u let me kill u ill give u nudiessss''
but with more bitching and attention whoring.
I actually meet probably in the range of 75/25 normal girls/"gamer girls" for the few girls I see online.
One of them I know actually doesn't like saying that she's a girl because guys, especially in FPSes, give her a lot of shit.

That's just GOTIS (NSFW). Ignore them, feeding them only makes them worse.
You will probably find you run into female gamers constantly, but s they do not make themselves stand out most times, you don't notice or care. Hell, for all you know over half of FP could be female, and yet we only know of a certain amount because they told us.
Sometimes when a girl is playing, say TF2, and they have a mic; it sounds like some twelve year old kid. The times I know right away it's a girl is when they have this chill laid back voice..
I find it hilarious, though, how whenever a girl is around it feels like the guys give her special treatment. So silly.

Yeah, this is really very true. Anonymity seems to default to masculinity for a lot of people, instead of gender ambiguity.

lol Yeah this happens much too often, it's just kinda sad I guess.
I bought my friend Marvel vs Capcom 3 the other day and she loved that, I know lots of girls that game.

Currently it's fat gamers with acme (Gamer guys) and skinny girls with long hair and tight jeans.
We don't need no combo of both. I don't wanna feel like living in America when walking down the street because all girls started gaming.
This isn't something amazing, gaming is now starting to become part of the norm in our culture.

The thing is from what I've seen that happens quite often in real life anyway.
I played a lot on a DoD server that had 2 female regulars.
At first it seemed pretty odd but after a while you didn't even think about it aside from the kitchen and sandwitch jokes.

True, but it is a lot more obvious in the sausage fests of online gaming.
I know a girl that plays the Sims 3 does that count? :v:
Yes, they're invading my TF2 and they're some of the most annoying Scouts you'll ever try to kill.
I know that there are many girls currently at The Gathering 2011 held in Norway currently. It might be a small indication of a shifting trend.

I actually wrote an article about that back in January, and it is very true. But, for people like me and some of the older gamers who have known video games to be a lot more of a sausage fest, it's still kinda odd.
To be honest, what does it honestly matter?
one of my best clan mates in my Mechwarrior days, was a girl, and to be honest, it never game up, or even mattered, at least to those with reasonable control of our dicks.
Hell, was in a ArmA clan briefly that was, well, all female except for me, now that was an amusing experience.
Well girls gaming is actually pretty common for the past decade around here (Philippines), though most either play Counter-Strike, Half-Life 1 Deathmatch, Warcraft III's DOTA, sometimes Red Alert 2, Starcraft, Generals, some other free rhythm games, MMORPGs, free2play shooters like Combat Arms or WarRock etc.
Basically anything that was popular during 2003 and below, or free games that are still updated or released recently. They usually reside on internet cafes along with guys, all day with DOTA, CS and the other games I mentioned before.
The really most common I've seen them is playing are rhythm games in arcades like DJMAX, Beatmania and those drum games like Taiko. Occasionally some Street Fighter & Tekken players as well. I also got a young 5 year old sister who's already into a lot of puzzle & platformer games like LittleBigPlanet, Super Mario and Monkey Island.
On the internet I guess I've seen them pretty common as well. Ran across some mostly on LBP, Killing Floor, TF2 and Battlefield Bad Company. Though I really don't see how it's actually anything new or amazing, since pretty much everyone likes fun and games, so I don't see why girls can't have a large demographic of gamers as well.
Just move on and accept that gaming isn't only held by men anymore. I'm actually glad it isn't this is probably one of the few things where anyone can compete on fair terms.

Damn it I want to play Mechwarrior again I fucking loved that game to the series to the death.
Every single girl on TF2 I've seen is a pyro. Not that they are the W+M1 types, it's just they are only playing pyro, never other classes.

My sister's a Pyromaniac so this would probably be the class for her.
(Then again I also play it a lot.)

lol I agree with you, I'm just saying it is interesting to see the demographic change.
It does seem a lot more common lately, but not to a huge degree. I see them a lot more often, but its still a rare thing.
Then again, its entirely possible there have been more, but lack of a mic doesn't always make it possible to determine.
On a random note, my ex is a gamer.
