Also Played Rayman, That was my first game ever.
With the first Super Mario games for NES and SNES, Super Mario Bros 3 IS one of the best games ever!

If you are asking for the very first game you remember playing to death then for me it's Sonic 2.
But I personally consider myself "growing up" on PC fps games like Doom 2, Duke Nukem 3D and later on, the Unreal series. They had more impact for me, but Sonic 2 was the game I first remember playing over and over.
