Back in 2010, a person known as 'rdein' released a small and short Game Maker game known as 'Momodora'. Something of an action-platformer, the graphic style was, author-admitted, inspired by Cave Story as you run through a gauntlet of stages with saves inbetween, picking up new weapons and various random trinkets along the way. The difficulty was rather brutal if you try rushing in any way, though, and dying boots you back to the title screen where you have to then load the last save and start that particular stage all over again. Story follows a girl named Isadora, from the land of Koho, where ritual sacrifices are commonplace to 'recreate the world'. When Isa's mother is sacrificed, however, she enters a forbidden land to literally try to bring her back from the dead.

A year later, and rdein released a sequel of sorts, Momodora II. Gone was the strict stage-to-stage formula, with a more Metroidvania-esque approach with exploration as an emphasis. Instead of getting tons of new weapons like the first, you get your Magic Leaf and, finding it early on, Seals for projectiles, and those stick for the entire game; from there, upgrades are found for the two, mostly for the latter, along with Love Letters that increase your max hearts and the other occasional item. A consequence is that the difficult was greatly reduced for the most part, since you can take a lot more damage overall and the game has less cheap enemy placement. The plot is relatively low-key but just slightly more existent than in the previous game as a young Koho shrine maiden named Momo is sent to that same forbidden land years later, in hopes of stopping the 'Underworld Queen' that's causing chaos for the various nearby lands.
Hint if you want to tone down your backtracking; [sp]hold down to Pray at the statues you find over the course of the game, if you forget to do this then they're marked with white squads on your map.[/sp]

Technically speaking, a Momodora III is in the works from rdein, and there was a demo released a while ago that covers the first portion of the intended game - seemed it was going to be very similar in scope and style to the second, complete with Momo from the second game returning. That is, until rdein decided to restart the project in a more linear stage approach with two different player characters. No real known details are known yet about this retooled version of the game.

The reason i'm posting this is mostly because I happened upon the Cave Story-like sprites from the first Momodora on The Spriters Resource, and decided to look it up on Youtube before downloading the games. Figured that since I liked them, might as well let people know about them, eh? The two fully-released ones take an hour each, maybe two, as they're.. Pretty simple and short games. Almost too short, sadly, but they're simple Game Maker projects so it's probably to be expected.
