As the title says, I'm bad at RTS games. I want to be good at them, as I want to enjoy Starcraft II when it comes out tomorrow. Now, I've played the Command and Conquer 3 campaign (which I couldn't complete on easy), or the original Starcraft campaign (couldn't get past the first "survive for half an hour" mission, I got Zergrushed...). How can I acquire skill in the RTS genre? tl;dr HELP! :(
I'm terrible at them, too. I remember as a kid when I played Starcraft, I just spammed cheats to hell, built up a gigantic fleet of Star Cruisers, and Yahama'd everything in sight [editline]04:13PM[/editline] shit OWNED
Me too, don't feel down :buddy:
You need to learn how to multitask so you can build things and control your army. EDIT: I learned this by playing with friends and learning after each defeat.
I don't really know how to help you, because I don't know what you're doing wrong.
You're probably fairly young, you get better at them as you age and get smarter. Plus you need to use your brain to control your army, build your base, and notice the weakpoints in your enemy's base/units/strategy.
Just think ahead on what you want to do. Makes things easier. Be like "I'm going to build a base over here whilst sending my army to point B. Better check if my new guys are done building and tell them to meet squad C at point A so they can meet squad B at point B. Also dicks." I was a beast at SC when I was 12.
I think, Domokun, you're right. I can't seem to concentrate on multiple tasks in a game (don't get me wrong here, I'm not a total spazz IRL...). The whole "build this, move these guys there, build more guys, upgrade this AT THE SAME TIME" is a bit overwhelming. [editline]09:23PM[/editline] Age has nothing to do with it, me and my best mate are both 17, but he's great at CnC3, but I suck balls at it.
I am the worst RTS player in the world but I still love them.
It's not hard man.
I'm awful too, I always thought I was alone, but this thread has comforted me. :3

As a general rule, in a game where you need to build up a bit of economy to support your army (most RTS games, in fact) remember to do that early. Keep the cash rolling in.
The key word is macros (atleast in SC2). Just use Ctrl + (any number key between 0-9 here) and then you can easily build an army bu clicking those keys and setting rally points. Else, set your workers on a job, let them do that while you in the mean time do other stuff, like building and maintaining your army. Or building an expansion and set up some defense for it. It's not hard when you get around doing it. Well I played the survive 30 mins mission a few days ago. They didn't have a chance. Could have killed the computer if I wanted too, because I knew how to maintain many things at once. So start small, and then go forward with the things, like start multitasking 2 buildings or tasks at once. When you can simply do that, start doing 3 things at the same time. Then just step up when you feel that you can handle it all without problem.
you need to learn to micro [editline]08:41PM[/editline] you won't really need to learn to micro in SC2 though cuz you can select like 160 units now
May I ask, what's Micro-ing?
Dont worry, im bad at some RTS, like company of heroes..

You think YOU'RE bad? Here's my tactic. 1. Spend all my points on basic infantry or tanks 2. Send to enemies. 3. Repeat.
I used to suck really bad at rts games. I always tried to look for build orders or strategies online, but it's really just the basics like having good macro and mechanics. I learned a lot about Starcraft 1 and 2 from watching Day[9] Daily episodes. http://day9tv.blip.tv/file/3732340/ (skip to 5 minutes if you don't wanna hear him talking about his life) It's an hour and a half long but, he shows you how to have a good "mental checklist" and talks about misconceptions that people have about apm and handspeed.
select army check supply make units group/move units check resources expand (or make buildings) check minimap
That is the mental checklist I do and once you can repeat a cycle like this fast enough, Starcraft is a lot easier.
BUILD MORE PYLONS! But really. Multitasking and knowing what units to use against different enemies.

I don't know what it is, I'm usually great at multitasking, but I can't do RTS.
You need to think of an Rts as a big game of rock paper scissors, everything has a strength and weakness, figure out what beats what, what is vulnerable to what, and what the enemy is using, scouts and infiltrators are very underrated, remember to build defenses of all types, diversify, the enemy will adapt if you just spam tanks, the best army is one that is one that is well rounded and can deal with multiple situations.
I am the worst RTS player in the world but I still love them.
Sorry. This title belongs to me. I've never finished a single RTS campaign without cheats. Usually I'm not even able to get past the 4th mission on the EASIEST difficulty.
May I ask, what's Micro-ing?
It's controlling your units as small groups (if not individually) as they fight on the battlefield. Both dawn of war games have a lot of this. Macro is more the large scale stuff, like researching, making units, getting resources.

Also it shows you some basic tips and tricks. And as you sad, Use scouts and infiltrators.
It's not hard man.
I'm pretty sure the reason he made this thread is that it is hard for him. :downs:
Watch replays when you loose. This works for cnc3 if you play online. Also you're only learning the game by playing online. Oh micro is important, but hard to learn for most people.
I'm way too defensive when I play RTS's. I for some reason love making complex fortifications that are nigh impenetrable.
I'm way too defensive when I play RTS's. I for some reason love making complex fortifications that are nigh impenetrable.
That's the main problem with nearly every fairly new person in RTS's. The way I've learned to play RTS's was mainly by joining observer matches in Warcraft 3. I examined the build order, what rules people generally followed, and how many units you should start off with. You rarely ever want to just build and make a huge base. You need at least some units to defend, and in the case of Warcraft 3, you need units to level up your hero. The only way to get better is by practice. I find that playing through the game's campaign helps a lot, but there's only so much you can learn in the single player.
